by Michael Cusortelli
Charlies Fury, a homebred 5-year-old Furyofthewind gelding racing for Tom and Kathleen McNally of Guthrie, Oklahoma, earned
his first graded stakes victory in the $55,680 Bob Moore Memorial Stakes-G2 at Remington Park on April 17.
Ridden by Agustin Silva for trainer Michelle Hurdle, Charlies Fury covered 300 yards in :15.258 while defeating Apollitical Papa by a head. The Oklahoma-bred gelding banked $34,422 from his seventh win in 21 outs and third career stakes score.
Charlies Fury was shortening in distance off of
his fourth-place finish 1 3/4-lengths behind winner Valiant Tiberias in the 440-yard Bank of America Oklahoma Championship Challenge-G2 on March 27. Raced in three states, including New Mexico and Iowa, the sorrel gelding has earned $314,761, and his resume includes victories in the 2019 Adequan Will Rogers Derby Challenge and last year’s Oklahoma QHRA Fall Classic Stakes, both at Will Rogers Downs.

AQHA RP Distance Chal.-G2
VIVA LE DON
by Tracy Gantz
It’s tough to take on a Distance Champion in only a second attempt around the hook, but Viva Le Don succeeded admirably in the $38,148 AQHA
Remington Park Distance Challenge-G2 on April 25. Sent off as the 4-1 fourth choice with Josh
Romero aboard, Viva Le Don broke in third and settled into second behind early pacesetter Higher Flyin Eagle. As they rounded the turn and began the stretch run, Viva Le Don started to close ground.
Viva Le Don caught Higher Flyin Eagle and drew away to win by 2 1/2-lengths in :45.611 over the closer Illtakeyouforaride. Higher Flyin Eagle held on for third, while Madewell, in his first 2021 start, finished fourth.
Tammy Johnson bred Viva Le Don in Texas
in partnership with Jack Manning and trains the 5-year-old gelding. Johnson owns Viva Le Don, who was winning his fifth stakes, with her husband Mike Wakefield and father Claud Johnson in the name of their Rockin J Running Horses.
Viva Arriba, the dam of Viva Le Don, has pro- duced three starters, all winners, including Viva Le Rock, who also competed in the Distance Challenge.
Kelsi Purcell rode Illtakeyouforaride (FDD Dynasty-Dashingfordestiny) to second for trainer Michael Joiner. Illtakeyouforaride Partnership owns the 7-year-old gelding, a three-time stakes winner.
Higher Flyin Eagle (Favorite Cartel-Royaltime Separatist) earned third under jockey Daniel Amaya for owners Amy and Joel Rod Pierce and trainer Clinton Crawford. The 5-year-old gelding won this race last year.
Madewell (Jess Jones-Streakin Peacock), Candyman Dash (Cartels Candy Man-Peekaboo Dash), SW Artemisia (Second Painted Sign-Snowbound Lady Bug), Viva Le Rock (Rock Solid Jess-Viva Arriba) and SW Gunslinger (Second Painted Sign-Smoking Kay TB) completed the order of finish.
Laico Bird Stakes-RG3
IM A FANCEE CHIK
by John Moorehouse
Im A Fancee Chik entered black type in her fourth career out, winning the $68,000 Laico Bird Stakes-RG3 at Remington Park on April 17.
Im A Fancee Chik ran at or near the front for the entirety of the 330 yards. She seized the lead at the approximate midpoint of the race, after JR What You Mean fell and lost her rider. Jockey Mario Delgado pushed Im A Fancee Chik to the wire in :16.660, registering a 93 speed index and bringing home a $37,800 payday for the filly’s owners, Danny and Dennis Salisbury. She also paid off well at the bet- ting window, facing 21-1 odds at post time.
The two-year-old filly has been to the winner’s circle three times, with her lone misstep in her career debut on March 9 at Remington when she finished second to Valerity, who coincidentally was also in the field for this race.
Clinton Crawford trains Im A Fancee Chik, who was bred by Danny Salisbury out of the Thoroughbred mare Dixie Marrone. This marked the first victory in the Laico Bird for any of Im A Fancee Chik’s connections.
Pevs Charley (One Fabulous Eagle-Miss Okey Dokey Zevi) finished second for owner Regina Laymon and trainer Kenny Laymon. Cristian Esqueda did the riding.
Shy Kisser (Kiss My Hocks-Shyann La Jolla) hit the board in third. Owned by Cuadra Chihuahua, LLC, the Oscar Nunez trainee had Gonzalo Gutierrez in the irons.
The remaining order of finish was JF Storm Wagon (Kool Wagon-Stormy Celebration), Ill Be Gone (Big Lew-Fast Red Rose), JS Dashin Capi (Capo de Capi-JS Abel Dasher), Luludashingstoli (One Dashing Eagle-Lulus Stoli), Valerity (Volcom-Corona Couture), Candy Going Grand (FDD Going Grand- Jess Send Me Candy). JR What You Mean did not finish and was walked off.
