                 Hoosier Park Classic
BEACH MERCEDES
by Danny Camp
Beach Mercedes has run first or second in 20 of her last 28 races. Her latest win came in the $83,087 Hoosier Park Classic at Indiana Grand Race
Course on Oct. 3.
The 5-year-old bay mare stepped away from the
7-post with Juan Marquez handling the reins. The jockey hustled and encouraged and by mid-race, they were a 1/2-length in front and they held that margin to the wire. Trained by Randy Smith, Beach Mercedes stopped the timer at :20.108 to earn an 87 speed index. Beach Mercedes banked the first place check worth $46,585 for owner Sheri Miller. She now has a total bankroll worth $266,794 and a race record of 28-9(2)-11(5)-1.
Miller bred Beach Mercedes out of Jaguar Rocket Quarter Horse Stakes winner Jess Alive Bully. The mare has produced 100% winners from seven start- ers, including four stakes placed runners. Beach Mercedes is her first stakes winner.
Miller and Smith also sent out runner-up Beach Cartel (Escondido Beach-Flashin Dee Dee), who had Samuel Mendez in the irons. The gelding won the Born Runner Classic earlier this year and in 2016
he also won the Sterlie Bertram Memorial and Blue River Derby.
Stinkin Rich (One Famous Eagle-Miss Scarlet) showed grit and determination to secure third place under Shanley Jackson for owner Carolyn Bruce and trainer Matt Frazier. The gelding won the Hoosier Park Classic in 2016, 2017 and 2018. He also won the Bob Woodard Memorial (twice), Miss Roxie Little Futurity and Jaguar Rocket Futurity.
Beach Treat (Escondido Beach-Treat Me To Cash), Yadi 1 (Wave Carver-Shez So Special), Ima Hot Lil Angel (Too Tough To Catch-Billie Bob TB), Abe (Jazz Be First-Magics Born Illusion) and First Habits (Habits Secret-Balenciaga) completed the order of finish.
South Dakota Bred Futurity
ONE FAMOUS PHOEBE
by Emily Blankenship
One Famous Phoebe glided to her first stakes vic- tory with a wire-to-wire finish in the $16,100 South Dakota Bred Futurity at Fort Pierre on Oct. 3.
Ridden by Brett Birzer, the filly broke on top from the 5-post. Despite an effort from Relentless Streak, One Famous Phoebe never reliquished her lead, crossing the finish line a neck in front. With this vic- tory, the filly has now won three in a row.
One Famous Phoebe completed the 250 yards in :13.725 and posted an 85 speed index.
Owned by Broken Heart Ranch and trained
by Robert Johnson, One Famous Phoebe has won
or placed in four races from five starts. The $7,889 winner’s share of this purse boosted her total lifetime earnings to $20,339.
Jennifer M. Ruzsa bred One Famous Phoebe out of lightly raced Classic Caliente. One Famous Phoebe is her first foal. Her second dam is Royalclassic Goddess, a full sister to Champion Royaltime Classic, winner of the AQHA Distaff Challenge Championship-G1, Top Deck Handicap-G3 and New Mexico Distaff Challenge-G3. She is also a
half sister to Champion Time For A Cigar and New Track Record Setter Thinkin Strawfly, who won the Northwest Juvenile Challenge.
Relentless Streak (Hes Relentless-Painted Streaks) finished in second under Larren Delorme for owner/trainer Tyler Stein. The gelding has placed in three of his four starts.
Splishsplashtknabath (First Place Eagle-Alambre) and jockey Giovany Estrada came in third for owner/ trainer Harley Moser. The filly was a finalist in the 1889 Futurity at Canterbury Park earlier this year.
Yomarkmyeagle (First Place Eagle-Yo Mark My Emotion), Rustirainman (Its Royal Time-Annie Is Easy), Frosty Eagle (Reagal Eagle-Race Track Chick) and Jess A Brief Case (First Down Mr Jess-Briefcase Cash) completed the order of finish.
South Dakota Bred Derby
LA REINA MADRE
by John Moorehouse
La Reina Madre entered the company of stakes win- ners, capturing the $15,000 South Dakota Bred Derby by a 1-length margin at Fort Pierre on Oct. 4.
La Reina Madre looked sharp and led from start to finish. Trained by Robert Johnson, the filly broke on top from the 2-post, opening a 1-length lead by the time she entered the stretch. She held to win by that same margin, covering the 250 yards in :13.605 and posting an 89 speed index.
This was the first stakes victory for La Reina Madre, who is no stranger to stakes company. She previously competed in four futurities as a rookie,
as well as the Iowa Double Gold Derby at Prairie Meadows this past summer. Jake Olesiak was aboard for this stakes-winning run.
Butch and Stephanie Webb home-bred the three- year-old filly, who picked up her second win in 16 career starts. Both victories have been registered this year, with the $7,350 payday from this result improv- ing her total bankroll to $46,124.
The Webbs bred La Reina Madre out of Madresita, a 2010 mare whom they also own. As a competitor, Madresita logged three stakes wins her- self—all of them restricted events—as highlights in a 24-race career that saw six total victories and nearly $114,000 in earnings. La Reina Madre became
the second stakes winner in the brood; the other, Luchador, is a half-brother to La Reina Madre.
The runner-up, Mami Chula (Kiss My Hocks- Madresita), is a stablemate of La Reina Madre whom the Webbs also own and bred. Brett Birzer was her rider. Jessabluemoonlady (First Down Mr Jess-Wave Me To The Moon) finished third for owner Dan Zinter and trainer Junior Dolphus. Larren Delorme was in the irons.
Hasta B An Effort (Hasta Be Fast-Oh So Effort) and Corona Necklace (Corona Up-Cinderellas Necklace) rounded out the order of finish.
