Ontario Bred Maturity
COUNTRYS COMIN BAC
by John Moorehouse
Forty proved to be the lucky number for Countrys Comin Bac. Making his 40th career start, the veteran seven-year-old gelding scored his first-ever
stakes victory, winning the $32,418 Ontario Bred Maturity held at Ajax Downs on Sept. 28.
Facing 11-1 odds, Countrys Comin Bac made
a driving finish to score this breakthrough stakes win. The gelding was running third at the first call, then chased down Fiesty Icon to grab the lead by 3/4-length as he entered the stretch. Countrys Comin Bac held off Fiesty Icon to win by that same margin.
Helen Vanek was aboard for a 400-yard trip that took :19.753, generating an 103 speed index that was aided by a 19 mph tailwind. Don Reid is the trainer.
Ralph Pearson owns Country Comin Bac, who logged his 13th victory and his second in seven starts this year. This latest win produced a $12,967 payday, elevating the gelding’s lifetime earnings to $159,863.
Marko Naterer bred Countrys Comin Bac out of winner Bac To Center. She has produced six winners from seven starters. Countrys Comin Bac is her first stakes winner.
Multiple stakes winner Fiesty Icon (Sugarman Perry-Fiesty Spirit) beat even-money favorite Five Bar Fandango by a head for runner-up honors. Richard Kennedy owns and trains Fiesty Icon, who had Ed Walton in the irons.
Five Bar Fandango (Five Bar Cartel-Had To Be A Fandango) was third for owners Carol and Jaime Robertson. The Bryn Robertson trainee had Ismael Mosqueira aboard.
The remaining order of finish was Tres On Fire (Fire Finder-Quick Six Lady), Shes Sizzling (Sizzlin Cartel-Shenandoah Special), Shake It Twice (Look At Magics Form-Shake Pretty Baby), Firing Red Jess (Mr Jess Tex-Easily Holland), and Momsextravagantheart (Look At Magics Form-Extravagant Moves). Night Fishn and Teller A Secret both scratched.
QROOI Sprint Series #3
NIGHT FISHN
by Danny Camp
Night Fishn hooked the biggest prize in the $16,642 QROOI Sprint Series #3 at Ajax Downs on Oct.19.
The 6-year-old mare broke from the 4-post under Ramiro Castillo. They were in front the whole way, but not by much. After a hard fought battle, they crossed the line a nose to the good.
Night Fishn stopped the clock in :13.284. The rainy day didn’t affect the track or dampen the spirit of the mare as she earned a 94 speed index.
Night Fishn secured the first place check of $6,723 for owner/breeder Mary Schrama, which boosted her total lifetime earnings to $79,809. She now has a race record of 22-7(2)-6-2, including a victory in the Ontario Sires Stakes Maturity. This stakes win marks her first win in a little over a year, getting back in the groove for trainer Dan Giles.
Schrama bred Night Fishn out of the winner Fisher Lines. The mare has produced 100% stakes winners from her first two starters, including
top earner Ice Fishn, who won the Ontario Sires Stakes Futurity and was third in the Ontario Sires Stakes Maturity.
Jess A Sweet Suprize (Sweet First Down-Jess Curl My Prize) showed grit and determination to get up for second place under Cory Spataro for owner/trainer Craig Spada.
Carneros (Prospect To The Top-Cakebread And Thou) finished third under Ed Walton for owner Milena Kwiecien and trainer Jason Pascoe.
Silken Siri (Desirio-Silken Memories), Zoxtobeyou (Pappasito-A Leading Memory), Chicksdigmymoneybags (Chicks Regard-Aaneta), Arctic Fame (Dash To The Arctic-Magic Ta Fame), Five Bar Fandango (Five Bar Cartel-Had To Be Fandango) and Countrys Comin Bac (Country Chicks Man-Bac To Center) completed the order of finish.
QROOI Distance Series #3
SPY FOR THE SENATE
by Michael Compton
Multiple stakes winner Spy For The Senate was anything but discreet in winning the $17,021 QROOI Distance Series #3 at Ajax Downs on Oct. 26.
With jockey Ismael Mosqueira aboard for owner Milena Kwiecien and trainer Carol McIntyre, Spy For The Senate took the lead early in the 440-
yard dash and never relinquished command. The 4-year-old colt won easily by a measured 1/2-length, stopping the timer in a lively :22.005, good for a 97 speed index.
It was the second QROOI Distance Series Stakes win of his season. He has now captured the Series
#1 and #3 and finished second in the Series #2. The $7,565 winner’s share of this purse increased the colt’s earnings to $111,954.
Mary Hainline bred Spy For The Senate, who is out of winner Corona Spy. The mare has produced 100% winners from two starters, including stakes placed MH Apollitical Spy.
The Kwiecien and McIntyre owner/trainer combo also sent out runner-up Maryland Magic (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Purley Un Social). With Helen Vanek aboard, he offered game chase but proved no match for the winner. Maryland Magic is a 9-time winner in his career and is now multiple stakes-placed in 2020.
Fiesty Icon (Sugarman Perry-Fiesty Spirit) and jockey Ed Walton finished third for owner/trainer Richard Kennedy. The multiple stakes-winning gelding was seeking a second straight stakes score after annex- ing the Alex Picov Memorial Champion Stakes in his previous outing where he defeated Spy For The Senate who was placed third in the race following a DQ.
Chicksdigmymoneybags (Chicks Regard- Aaneta), Jess A Deal (Dealagame-Jess Marcy) and Tempting First Dash (Shinin First Dash-A Tempting Chick) completed the order of finish. Firing Red Jess was scratched.
