Harley Greene Derby
BEACH BLAST
by Tracy Gantz
The broodmare Jess Alive Bully is having a big impact on the Harley Greene Derby at Indiana Grand. Her son Beach Blast won this year’s edition on June 5, and her daughter Beach Mercedes won the race in 2018. Her son Jess A Flyin Beach finished second
in the 2020 edition of the race and won the $94,942 Born Runner Classic, also at Indiana Grand June 5.
Beach Blast, the third-fastest qualifier from the May 17 trials, went off as the even-money favorite. Ridden by Samuel Mendez, Beach Blast completely dominated the 350-yard Harley Greene. He led throughout and won by 1 3/4-lengths in :17.650.
Randy Smith trains Indiana-bred Beach Blast for owners Keith Bode and Brock Hutchinson. Bode and Hutchinson bought Beach Blast for $22,000 from Miller Ranch at the 2019 QHRAI Speed Sale. Last year Beach Blast won the Miss Roxie Little Futurity, also at Indiana Grand.
Shari Miller bred Beach Blast out of stakes- winning Jess Alive Bully, who has produced eight winners from nine starters, including three stakes winners and two stakes-placed runners.
Fastest-qualifier WH Imastreakinbeach (Escondido Beach-WH Streakin Pie) finished second under jockey Jose Ruiz. Erin Thompson trains the filly for owner Thomas Wylie. WH Imastreakinbeach won half of her eight prior starts.
Julia Rae and Tyler Martin’s Jess Bringin It On (Jess Zoomin-Billie Bob TB), ridden by Cesar Esqueda and trained by Paul Martin, finished third. Jess Bringin It On broke her maiden in her Harley Greene trial.
Completing the field were Beach Diva (Escondido Beach-Flashin Dee Dee), Stone Lake (Escondido Beach-Silly Chix), Mitey Persuasive (Jazz Be First- Mitey Victoria), Beach Runaway (Escondido Beach- Flashin Dee Dee), Ashwins Valentine (Escondido Beach-La Una Viva) and Beach Stone (Brimmstone- Coco Beach). Beach Front was scratched.
Born Runner Classic
JESS A FLYIN BEACH
by Tracy Gantz
Seven of the 10 runners in the $83,200 Born Runner Classic at Indiana Grand on June 5 were by Escondido Beach, and the stallion hit the Trifecta. Jess A Flying Beach, Beach Mercedes and Beach Cartel, all by Escondido Beach, finished first, second and third.
Favored Jess A Flyin Beach got away quickly under jockey Erik Esqueda. Though Beach Mercedes, his full sister, came flying on the outside, Jess A Flyin Beach held off the mare by a slim nose, stopping the timer in :19.948 for 400 yards.
Anthony Cunningham owns and trains Jess A Flyin Beach, who was winning his first stakes. Jess A Flyin Beach ran second in the 2020 Harley Greene Derby and third in the 2019 Miss Roxie Little Futurity.
Shari Miller bred Jess A Flyin Beach in Indiana from stakes-winning Jess Alive Bully. The mare has produced eight winners from nine starters. Three are stakes winners and two are stakes-placed.
Miller bred and owns Beach Mercedes (Escondido Beach-Jess Alive Bully), and Samuel Mendez piloted the 6-year-old mare to second. Randy Smith trains Beach Mercedes, who won the 2018 Harley Greene Derby and 2020 Hoosier Park Classic Stakes.
Miller also owns and bred third-place Beach Cartel (Escondido Beach-Flashin Dee Dee), like- wise trained by Smith. German Rodriguez rode the 9-year-old gelding, who has won four
stakes, including the Born Runner Classic in 2016 and 2020.
Completing the field were Jess Z Bob (Jess Zoomin-Billie Bob-TB), Rock Hard Candy (Escondido Beach-Jesses Candy), Abe (Jazz Be First- Magics Born Illusion), HH C J Shake (Escondido Beach-Shakem Jake), Beach Benny (Escondido Beach-Streaking Stitches), I Like Beer (Escondido Beach-Gevalia) and J J Zoomin (Jess Zoomin-Justa Dance). Beach Bum Eddie was scratched.
Bob Morehouse Stakes
FIRE N GUNS
by Danny Camp
If winning by a whisker was a thing, then that would have been the margin of victory for Fire N Guns in the 350-yard $40,400 Bob Morehouse
Stakes at Canterbury Park.
Fire N Guns showed some nerves before the break,
but when the starter pushed the button, he stepped away from fourth the inside post. The 5-year-old brown gelding immediately had some ground to make up as he was a bit away from the leader. Under jockey Ry Eikleberry, Fire N Guns was in second at the top of the stretch and edged out Dickey Bob to cross the wire by a slim nose. They stopped the clock in :17.930 to earn a 90 speed index for the distance.
The gelding earned the $20,200 first place check, which ups his total bankroll to $49,446. His race record stands at three wins out of 10 starts. Fire N Guns ran fourth in this same stakes last year. His team includes owner Fred C. Pelzer and trainer Ralph Haglund.
Pelzer bred Fire N Guns out of unraced Garters N Guns. She has produced 100% winners from six starters, including Explosive Guns, winner of the Cash Caravan Stakes. Fire N Guns is her second stakes winner.
The favorite Dickey Bob (Apollitical Jess-Paint Or More) exploded from the outside under Luis Valenzuela and had the lead every jump except the last one. The gelding grabbed second for owner Lunderborg LLC and trainer Jason Olmstead. Corona White Socks (Corona Caliente-Holy White Socks TB) banked the third place check for owner Daniel Kjorsvik and trainer Patrick Swan. Nik Goodwin was in the irons. Followed by Living In The Past (Little PYC-Jazzing Jackie), Johnee B (Separatist-Little Miss Hempness), Haute Wagon (Wagons West-Chics Timeto Fling), Streak N Sparks (Azoom-Streak N Sierra) and Jess A Lil Cash (Ja Jess Perfect-Dimples Dash O Denim). Holy Storm and Western Reserve were scratched.
