Wyoming Bred Derby
SHIZA QUEEN
by Danny Camp
Shiza Queen set a New Track Record in the June 12 trials to the $35,450 Wyoming Bred Derby at Energy Downs. She won her qualifying race
in wire-to-wire fashion, winning by 1-length and clocking in at :17.044 for a 111 speed index.
The sorrel filly came into the June 26 finals with the fastest qualifying time, and she ran true to form.
Shiza Queen stepped away from the 1-post in great position, getting the second call from the gates. At the halfway mark, she was only a head in front. At the top of the stretch she was a neck in the lead. Under Jose Guzman, Shiza Queen pushed on and crossed the finish line 3/4-length in front.
Trained Martha Maldonado, Shiza Queen completed the 350 yards in :17.251 to earn a 105 speed index. The daughter of Maknmoves also banked the first place check worth $12,408 for owner/breeder Pedro Mena.
Including that check, she has now earned $42,216, with wins in four of her five starts. In her maiden start, she won her trial to the Ron Cook Wyoming Bred Futurity and then scored a wire- to-wire victory in the $54,250 finals last year. She finished second was in an allowance - the only race she didn’t win and her first start of 2021.
Pedro Mena bred Shiza Queen out of lightly raced Unitas Queen. She has produced two winners from four starters, including stakes placed Uintas Legendary. Shiza Queen is her first stakes winner.
Eyesa Special Hachet (Eyesa Special Slim- Streaking Ruby Red) came into the Wyoming Bred Derby with the fifth fastest qualifying time and improved to second in the finals. The gelding is owned by Broken Bones Cattle Company and is conditioned by Jessie Villegas. Luis Peralta was in the irons for this race.
Bigg Brown (Choctaw River-Purrfect Eve) was sixth fastest qualifier and was third in the finals under Shaunda Larsen for owners Dan Lapierre and Kim Lapierre and trainer Jordan Hadley. The gelding was 2nd in the Rock Springs Wyoming Bred Futurity and 3rd in the Ron Cook Wyoming Bred Futurity.
Followed by Als Dynasty (Jr Dynasty Mountain-BF Pieces Of April), Bodacious Denali (Bodacious Dash-Denali Deception), Handsome Patrick (One Handsome Man-Leading The Chase), Dicey Seduction (Our Dicey Ffm-Seduce), Makn Diamonds (Maknmoves-Diamonds Tiny Effort) and Glock Time (Glock-Out Of The Dust). CG A Mighty Wood was scratched.
Powder River Vet Derby
BLAZIN MR JESS
by Danny Camp
Blazin Mr Jess set fire to the racetrack at Energy Downs on June 25, winning the $16,650 Powder River Vet Derby.
The sorrel filly stepped away from the 3-post a
bit tardy in second under Jesus Valenzuela.
At the first call, she was still in second, a neck
behind leader Volcums Hot Candy. At the top of the stretch, Blazin Mr Jess and Jesus Valenzuela had a 1-length lead, and they coasted home to a 1/2-length victory.
Trained by Riley Moosman, Blazin Mr Jess earned a 105 speed index for completing the 350 yards in :17.275.
The daughter of Dashin Mr Jess banked the first place check worth $8,325 for owner/breeder Pedro Mena.
She has now earned a total of $13,251, and her race record stands at two wins out of four races. Blazin Mr Jess won her maiden out in the trials
to the 2020 Hadley/Giles Futurity, in which she finished a distant seventh in the $88,268 finals after being squeezed in tight early in the contest.
Pedro Mena bred Blazin Mr Jess out of unraced Blazin Mean, who is a half-sister to Blazin Moon Force, the third place finisher in the New Mexico Classic Futurity-RG2. Blazin Mr Jess is her first winner from two starters. Her second dam is Blazin Force, who was a runner up in the NMHBA Stakes-RG2 and finished third Shue Fly Stakes-RG1
Volcums Hot Candy (Volcom-Candy Cartels Cat) broke sharply from the 9-post and had the lead for a while. She was able to hold on to pocket second place money. Her connections include owner Buckway Ranch LLC and trainer Jordan Hadley. Tyson Lusk was handling the reins. The filly is a winner of three races.
Wildroses101 (Ja Jess Perfect-Weeds In My Roses) made a big push at the finish to capture third place under Rey Hernandez for owners Alan Ostdahl and Tyler Gibbs, who is also the trainer. The gelding broke her maiden in his first out, but has yet to score again although he is a finalist in multiple stakes events.
Sonshein (Freighttrain B-Babe On The Beach), VVR Corona Cowboy (Coronas Velvet-Proud Caption), Flashin Ember (First Moonflash-Episode Of Fire), Classy Noble Champ (Class Jump-Noble Champ) and Big Sizter (Rex Hill-Six Easy Sisters) completed the order of finish. Belles Blue Flash and Goldenfrostmoves were scratched.
Fred Scane Memorial
HITTERS COUNT
by Tracy Gantz
Betting on Dr. Ed Allred’s homebred two year olds in the Trifecta for the June 19 Fred Scane Memorial Handicap at Los Alamitos paid $249.80.
Allred’s Hitters Count defeated his other two entries - Call It Close and She Goes Up - to win the stakes for two-year-old fillies.
Victor Salazar piloted Hitters Count from
the rail, and the filly got away from the gate professionally and on the lead, despite She Goes Up acting up slightly in the 2-post. Hitters Count stayed in front throughout the 350 yards, and held on to prevail by a nose in :18.014.
It was especially rewarding for Allred to win a stakes named for Fred Scane. Scane, who died in 2020, had served as stallion manager at Allred’s Rolling A Ranch, handling such stallions as Kiddy Up, the sire of Hitters Count and Call It Close.
Scott Willoughby trains Hitters Count for Allred. The filly now is undefeated in three starts.
Allred bred Hitters Count in California from his winning homebred mare What A Hit, who has produced three winners in five starters. The second dam is multiple stakes producer Chickasis.
Cesar DeAlba trains Call It Close (Kiddy Up-Escape The Fire) for Allred, and Diego Herrera rode the filly. Call It Close won twice in three previous starts.
Willoughby also conditions She Goes Up (Seperate Interest-Up For It) for Allred, and Henry Lopez was aboard. She Goes Up broke her maiden in her second start and ran third in a futurity trial.
Completing the field were La Blue Amore (Kiddy Up-Amore La Blue) in fourth, followed by Race Thru The Fire (Fly Thru The Fire-Miss Racy Racie), A Painted Legacy (PYC Paint Your Wagon- Apollitical Legacy), Val Frida (Stel Corona-Favorite Strawfly), and Blues Girls Favorite (Favorite Cartel- Blues Girl Too).
