                 Diezs Daylight is undefeated in 2023, with this victory as well as a 3/4-length win in an optional claiming event at Sunland Park on Jan. 14.
Bred in New Mexico by Max Fraze, Diezs Daylight is produced from the winning Brimmerton mare Diez Tambien.
The 2023 Mesilla Valley Speed Handicap was the 20th running of this race. Sent off at odds of 7.60- 1, Diezs Daylight returned $17.20 to win.
Runner-up HS Paul Walker (Osbaldo-Strawberryberryfast), sent off as the even-money favorite, rallied through the lane but came up a 1/2-length short
in the end for owner/breeder Hubaldo Solis and trainer Alfredo Gomez. The 7-year-old gelding entered the race off a win in
the Red or Green Stakes-G2 at Sunland Park on Jan. 7. HS Paul Walker is an 8-time winner with $298,242 banked in his career thus far.
Multiple graded stakes winner No Mires A La Luna (First Moonflash-Dont Looke Ethel), with jockey Sergio Becerra Jr. in the irons, closed ground in the lane late to finish
third for owner/breeder Byron Woodard and trainer Elbert Munoz. No Mires a La Luna won the Namehimastreaker New Mexico Classic Championship Stakes-G1 last October after originally crossing the wire in second behind HS Paul Walker, who was disqualified and placed fourth for breaking out. All
told, No Mires A La Luna is closing in on $700,000 in career earnings. The 7-year-old gelding also annexed last year’s First Moonflash Maturity-G2 and
the 2021 Jess Burner Stakes-G2 and Zia Stakes-G2, as well as the 2020 New Mexico Classic Cup Championship Stakes and the 2019 Zia Derby-G2.
