DICKEY BOB
by Tracy Gantz
Dickey Bob is the kind of horse everyone would like in their barn. Now 8, he keeps returning year after year, winning stakes and adding to his
total bankroll, now standing at $440,764. Most recently, Dickey Bob captured his third Prairie Dash Stakes on Sept. 8 at Prairie Meadows.
Only four dared to challenge Dickey Bob, who went off as the 1-5 favorite under regular rider Edwin Escobedo. When the gate opened, Dickey Bob went right to the front, and though several challenged him, he held his younger rivals at bay to score wire- to-wire by a neck in :15.305.
Jason Olmstead trains Dickey Bob for Lunderborg LLC, which bred the gelding in Minnesota. This was Dickey Bob’s 14th lifetime stakes victory and his third consecutive win following the July 12 Bob Morehouse Stakes at Canterbury Park and an Aug. 27 allowance race at Prairie Meadows.
Dickey Bob is out of Paint Or More, who raced for Lunderborg and won the 2011 North Central QHRA Futurity and finished third in the 2012 Canterbury Park Derby. The mare has produced
six starters, all winners, including multiple stakes winners PYC Jess Bite Mydust and Jess Rocket Man.
Wieburg (Ivory James-Hollie Jollie), bred, owned, and trained by Patrick Swan, finished second. Stormy Smith rode the 5-year-old gelding, who won the 2021 Lobo Derby.
Tom Maher’s homebred Relentless Okie (Hes Relentless-Ms Dynasty), also trained by Olmstead, ran third under jockey Ramiro Garcia. The 3-year-old gelding was coming off a second in the Canterbury Park Derby and ran third in the 2022 MQHRA Stallion Auction Futurity.
