LIPSTICK PROMISE
by Elle Summers
Lipstick Promise, a three-year-old daughter of
A Revenant, sprinted to a 1 1/4-length victory in the La Villita Stakes at Retama Park on Sept. 1.
With Froylan Ramirez in the irons, the brown filly broke fourth but quickly gained ground to be in the lead at the first call. She dueled with third place finisher Suzie Que throughout the stretch and drew away late with a big advantage. Lipstick Promise is trained by Kie Mushinkski.
Campaigned only in Texas, this victory marks Lipstick Promise’s fourth overall win and second stakes win. Her first stakes win was the John Buchanan Memorial at Sam Houston in June. The $26,700 winner’s share of the La Villita Stakes purse increases her total lifetime earnings to $88,794. Lipstick Promise was bred in Texas by owner Jerry Lee Davis and is out of winner A Passionate Lady, a 2012 mare by Demonstrative. A Passionate Lady has produced 2 winners from 2 starters, including 2018 gelding Drinks After Work, a half- brother to Lipstick Promise by One Sweet Jess.
Ridden by Raul Hernandez Jr., Dakota
Gurl (Muddy Watters-Runaway Charli) rallied throughout the stretch and secured second place with 1/2-length for owner/breeder Sunset Well Service Inc. Dakota Gurl is trained by Jorge Valenzuela.

ONTHROCKS
by John Moorehouse
Onthrocks scored his third straight win, all in stakes races, with an impressive performance in the $45,000 Tower of the Americas Stakes held on
Sept. 2 at Retama Park.
Ware Racing & Ranching LLC home-bred
Onthrocks, a 4-year-old gelding who now holds 6 victories in 14 lifetime starts. The $27,000 prize from this race improved his bankroll to $135,637. All of his black-type stakes finishes have come this season, with a 3rd in the Sam Houston Classic-G2, then consecutive victories in the Sam Houston 550 Stakes and TQHA 550 Stakes leading into this race.
A strong post-time favorite at 3-5 odds, Onthrocks broke well from the No. 3 gate and opened a 1/2-length lead at the first call. The gelding maintained that advantage going into the stretch then drew clear, sporting a margin of 1 1/4 lengths as he reached the wire.
Esteban Rubio trains Onthrocks, who finished the 550-yard trip in :27.613 for a 99 speed index. Jose Alvarez had the riding assignment.
Onthrocks is out of Stol A Bunny, an unraced 2009 mare.

MOONINMYMEMORIES
by John Moorehouse
Going off as a 17-1 longshot in the $45,000 Selma Stakes, Moonin My Memories surprised to score her first-ever win in stakes company on Sept. 2
at Retama Park. Esteban Rubio trains Moonin My Memories, who made the 350-yard trip in :17.802 for a 97 speed index with Jose Alvarez in the irons. Alvarez and Rubio also combined for the winning horse in the Tower of Americas Stakes on this same Retama card.
Sarah Huskey owns and bred Moonin My Memories, a four-year-old filly who collected the fourth win of her career and second of the 2023 campaign. Despite her underdog status at the betting window, Moonin My Memories won this race decisively. She broke well from the No. 3 gate, ran a close second at the first call, then surged into the lead with a separation of 1 1/2-lengths by the time she entered the stretch. The filly continued to widen the gap and hit the wire with a 2-length margin of victory.
The stakes win produced a $27,000 payday that swelled the lifetime bankroll of Moonin My Memories to $83,453. Moonin My Memories is out of Good Ole Memories, a lightly-raced 1998 mare.
Ladys Wicked (Mighty B Valiant-Ladys In It for Love) finished second for owner Raedele Phipps and trainer Daniel Uballe Sr. Claudio Aguilar had the riding assignment.
