SOUTHWESTERLY
by John Moorehouse
After posting the fastest qualifying time for the $90,508 John Deere Arizona Downs Juvenile Challenge, Southwesterly came back and outraced her foes on July 30 in the stakes final.
Scott McDaniel owns the two-year-old filly, who broke her maiden in the trials for this race, finishing her 350-yard run in :17.859. That helped make her the strong post-time favorite, going off at 3-5 odds.
A John Allred trainee, Southwesterly broke well from the No. 5 gate and moved into the lead by a head at the first call. Southwesterly stayed in front at each remaining call, leading by a neck going into the stretch. Martin Osuna was aboard, navigating the filly on a sloppy (sealed) track. The victory reaped a $41,634 payday that increased her total earnings to $46,034.
She was faster in the stakes final than she was
in the trials, making the trip in :17.398 for a 109 speed index. With this win, Southwesterly also qualified for the John Deere Juvenile Challenge Championship, a Grade 2 race with an estimated $125,000 payday taking place as part of the Bank of America Challenge Championships card on Oct. 22 at Horseshoe Indianapolis.
Steve Burns DVM bred Southwesterly out of Separate Tac, a 2003 mare and winner of the 2006 running of the All American Derby.
Ms Flaming Finish (Mr Jess Perry-Flaming Chula) was second for LG Racing LLC. The Javier Duarte trainee had Jesus Canales aboard. Mr Snootie Cartel (Mr Ease Cartel-Snootie Socialite), a 38-1 underdog, finished third under David Reyes-Frisby for owner Aaron Zazueta Grijalva and trainer Priscilla Leon.
The remaining order of finish was Itz Goin Down (KVN Corona-High Valley Girl), Prince Shasta (Bodacious Dash-Sparklin Royal), Ignytion (Carters Cartel-Mezmerik), Whiskey Wes (Panama Wes-Maur Bug), and Sockit Tooya (Five Bar Cartel-Luv Supreme). Arrogance and Mister Jim both scratched.

LA PANAMA WEST
by Michael Compton
La Panama West scored the first stakes win of her career with a determined victory in the $24,000 Double JK Ranch Stakes at Arizona
Downs on Aug. 20.
Ridden by Aaron Belloc, La Panama West
came in at the start of the 300-yard dash but recovered quickly to contend for command in a matter of strides. She took over in the lane and surged clear late to win by 3/4-length at the finish, stopping the timer in :15.493. The final clocking earned a 101 speed index.
An Arizona homebred for Roberto Baeza,
La Panama West improved her overall record to 5-2-1-1 for trainer Candelario Villamar and the $13,200 winner’s share of the purse increased her bankroll to $22,505. The daughter of Panama Wes broke her maiden at Arizona Downs in July and she finished third in the Mingus Mountain Stakes at Arizona Downs in her previous outing on July 30.
La Panama West is produced from the Furrtreeous mare JM the Dance, a three-time winner during her racing career.
Runner-up Tubac Royale (Flair For Dancing- Spectacular Fit) and jockey Martin Osuna chased throughout and held second in a steady effort for owner Miguel Lopez and trainer Vanessa Marquez. The 7-year-old gelding is a two-time winner and was bred in Arizona by Eddie Megariz.
Exactly Like Ivory (Ivoru James-Exactly Like You), piloted by David Reyes-Frisby, finished third for owner Cesar Ortiz and trainer Rafael Barraza. The 5-year-old gray gelding broke his maiden in July at Arizona Downs

FLIGHT CLUB
by Danny Camp
Flight Club secured his fifth stakes victory in the $44,136 Bank of America Evergreen Park Championship Challenge on Aug. 7.
Ridden by J. Botello, the gelding broke in
second from the 6-post and battled with leader Rowdyvision. Halfway through the race, Flight Club secured the lead by a head and continued to lengthen his distance, crossing the wire 1/2-length in front.
Trained by William Leech, the team completed the 440 yards in :22.267, while posting a 94 speed index.
The $22,068 winner’s share of the purse boosted his lifetime earnings to $81,016 for owner Charles Stojan.

The gelding was also second in the Old Timers Classic Stakes earlier this year. Stojan and Leech also teamed up on third place finisher Getit Foose (Foose-Getit Together), who was ridden by Ricardo Moreno.
