                 Canterbury Park Derby
JESST FOR SPEED
by Michael Compton
Jesst For Speed had speed to spare in running to record the first stakes victory of his career in the $68,175 Canterbury Park Derby on Aug. 10.
Trained by Mallory Norton and ridden by Gonzalo Gutierrez, Jesst For Speed broke alertly from the 3-gate in the 400-yard test and ran to the front a few strides away from the starting gate.
He showed the way through the lane and prevailed by a comfortable 1/2-length at the finish, stopping the timer in a brisk :19.740, clocking a 101 speed index.
The $30,678 winner’s share of the purse swelled Jesst For Speed’s bankroll to $98,077 and the stakes score improved his record to 15-4-1-5. While the Canterbury Park Derby was his first stakes tally, Jess For Speed was also a finalist in the Oklahoma Derby-G3 at Remington Park in March.
Owned by Bryton Dewald, Jesst For Speed was bred in Utah by Stephan and Lisa Ralston and is out of the Corona Cartel mare Shaded In Speed, who won the Lassie Handicap Stakes in 2004. She produced seven winners out of nine starters with earnings of $364,331.
Multiple stakes winner Relentless Courage (Hes Relentless-Newport Lily) and jockey Jorge Torres finished a game second for owners Tom Maher and Paul Luedemann and trainer Jason Olmstead.
Maher and Olmstead also combined to hit the board with third-place finisher and stakes winner Relentless Legacy (Hes Relentless-Legacys A Streakin). Ridden by Tanner Thedford, Relentless Legacy dueled for the lead early and weakened a bit late.
Waitin On Eight (Valiant Hero-Midnight Sunlight), Tres Elegance (Tres Seis-Ja Jess Elegance), Captivate This (Tres Seis-Midnight Sunlight), Apolitical Sass (Apollitical Jess-Jess Sass Me), Runaway Separtely (Separate Interest-Runaway in Style), Five Bar Fantasy (Five Bar Cartel-Ja Fantasy), and Hallelujah 21 (FDD Dynasty-Dianas Tres Seis) followed.
Skip Zimmerman Memorial
DICKEY BOB
by Danny Camp
Stakes veteran Dickey Bob scored yet another stakes victory in the $28,000 Skip Zimmerman Memorial at Canterbury Park on Aug. 11.
Ridden by Ramiro Garcia, Dickey Bob broke in second from the 4-post and quickly secured the lead. The team made a steady run to the wire and prevailed by 1/2-length.
The gelding, who is trained by Jason Olmstead, completed the 350 yards in :17.359, while posting a 107 speed index. His victory was worth the $14,000 winner’s share for owner/breeder Lunderborg LLC, boosting his total lifetime earnings to $380,250.
Raced in three states, including Iowa, Minnesota and Oklahoma, Dickey Bob has won 23 races from 45 starts, 12 of which were stakes events. The impressive gelding has also set two New Track Records.
Lunderborg LLC bred Dickey Bob out of North Central QHRA Futurity winner Paint Or More, who also ran third in the Canterbury Park Derby. The mare has produced 100% winners from five starters, including Jess Rocket Man, who won the Keokuk Stakes-G3, Minnesota Derby, North Star State Derby and Bob Morehouse Stakes, where he set a New Track Record. Dickey Bob is her second stakes winner and top earner.
Lunderborg LLC also owns Jess Rocket Man (Apollitical Jess-Paint Or More), who won his last three in a row, but had to settle for second. The Jason Olmstead trainee had Edwin Escobedo in the irons. The gelding has won four stakes races, including the Keokuk Stakes-G3 earlier this year.
Jason Olmstead also trained third place finisher Shes Already Famous (Mr Jess Perry-Famous Corona Lady), who was ridden by Armando Alvidrez for owner Grant Farms LLC.
HR Storm On In (Red Storm Cat-Scentsy), FDD Texas Tea (FDD Dynasty-Jetblack Gold Moment) and Fosse (Foose-Check N Fetch) completed the order of finish.
Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity
ALOTTA OH LA LA
by Michael Compton
The final proved to be a near repeat of the trials with fastest qualifier Alotta Oh La La getting the best of her rivals once again with the same three horses chasing her across the finish line for the second consecutive race in the $105,100 Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity at Canterbury Park on Aug. 10
Alotta Oh La La, with Stormy Smith back in the saddle, broke alertly and took command of the 350-yard event at the break. She dueled early for trainer Mallory Norton before stretching her lead to a 1/2-length in
the lane. She maintained a clear advantage through the lane and scored wire-to-wire by 1/2-length in the end, stopping the timer in :17.732 for a 96 speed index.
With the $44,142 winner’s share of the purse, Alotta Oh La La lifted her earnings total to $81,885. This was her second stakes win, and she improved her record to 6-3-1-1. This is his third consecutive win, previously capturing the MQHRA Stallion Auction Futurity at Canterbury Park on July 13.
Homebred in North Dakota, Alotta Oh La La is out of the multiple stakes winning mare Little Love Affair who has produced eight winners from eight starters.
Runner-up Charlies Politician (Apollitical Jess-Tres Seis Folszookie), with jockey Tanner Thedford in the irons, finished second again after being beaten by a head by Alotta Oh La La in the July 27 trial heat. He is owned by Cavanaugh Quarter Horses LLC and is trained by Clinton Crawford. Waymakerr (Stel Corona-Classy In Red) and jockey Alfredo Triana Jr. pressed the leader early but weakened to third late for owners/breeders Kyle and Jessica Johnson and trainer Jason Olmstead. Relentless Okie (Hes Relentless-Ms Dynasty), Davila (Hes Relentless-Itea), Reloaded With Corona (Corona Cartel-Reloaded And Ready), My Candys Relentless (Hes Relentless-Send Your Candy), Hot Politician Z (Apollitical Jess-Kinda Spicey), and Jettin Jetta (EC
