challenge from the outside, but She Goes Up defeated him by three-quarters of a length in :17.673 for 350 yards.
The Governor’s Cup Futurity was the sec- ond consecutive race that night won by Allred and trainer Scott Willoughby. In the previ-
ous race, the Spencer L. Childers California Breeders Championship Handicap-RG1, Allred and Willoughby hit the Trifecta with Circle City, Nomadic, and Chocolatito.
“It was a fantastic night,” stated Willoughby. “She Goes Up has been a solid filly. We were very happy for her to qualify. She broke like a rocket.”
Fifth in her racing debut, She Goes Up hadn’t finished worse than third in four subsequent starts. She broke her maiden in her second attempt and finished third in the Fred Scane Memorial Handicap.
“She Goes Up has been good out of the gate in every one of her starts,” said Allred. “She’d lead for about 200 yards. I never dreamed she would go all the way in this race.”
Allred was pleased that a daughter of Up For It could win the same race as her dam, especially given the spider bite, which Allred says almost killed Up For It.
“She’s a great broodmare,” said the owner. “Her grandmother is the stakes winner Flare For Toby.”
That makes Flare For Toby the third dam of She Goes Up. Dallas Blakley bred Flare For Toby in Texas and raced the filly through much of her career. Flare For Toby placed in several stakes, but became a stakes winner at Los Alamitos.
Flare For Toby won her first stakes, the 1998 Duplicate Copy Handicap, for Blakley. After Allred acquired her, she won four more, including two editions of the Mildred N. Vessels Memorial Handicap-G1. Flare For Toby ended her career with a victory in the 2002 Charger Bar Handicap-G1, earning a total of $523,204.
Fire For Toby, a daughter of Flare For Toby and the second dam of She Goes Up, never raced. But she in turn produced Up For It. An earner of $164,280 in only six starts, Up For
It has produced five winners in nine starters, including Up For Speed, who ran second in the 2020 Governor’s Cup Derby-RG2 and PCQHRA Breeders Derby-G2.
Watch Out (Fly Thru The Fire-Look Her Over), trained by James Glenn Jr., finished second. Ridden by Juan Leon, Watch Out had won two of his three previous races.
Jesus Ayala rode Favorite Honey (Favorite Cartel-Coronas Fast Honey) to third for trainer Monty Arrossa. Five Livestock Company LLC and Steve Wright own the gelding, who was coming off back-to-back victories.
Rounding out the field were Call It Close (Kiddy Up-Escape The Fire), Fire Fast Honey (Walk Thru Fire-Coronas Fast Honey), Set For It (Seperate Interest-Up For It), Sizzling N Fast
(Walk Thru Fire-Sizzling) and Seperate Cruises (Seperate Interest-Five Star Cruise TB). Nevada Charles and The Swamp were scratched.
