Zia Futurity-RG1
FLASHIN FIRE
by Michael Cusortelli
A$20,000 claim in his career debut at Remington Park last spring, Flashin
Fire paid big dividends for owner Jose E. Guzman, as the sorrel gelding overcame a less-than-perfect start to win the 400-yard Zia Futurity-RG1 for New Mexico-bred two-year- olds at Ruidoso Downs on Aug. 1.
Flashin Fire defeated Cowboy Zulu by a neck in :20.008 while racing against a slight 4-mph head wind. Juan Pulido rode the gelded son of 2009 Champion Aged Stallion First Moonflash for trainer Santos Carrizales Jr.
Flashin Fire earned the $134,318 winner’s share of a $319,804 purse, despite breaking last out of the gate.
“We got started behind, so I made the decision right away to move to the outside,” said Pulido. “We were able to go around them, and then we finally caught (Cowboy Zulu) just in time.”
The fastest qualifier, Flashin Fire broke his maiden with a 1/2-length victory in the fifth of 10 Zia Futurity trials on July 16.
