TQHA 550 Stakes-RG3
TEN SENT
by John Moorehouse
After three straight in-the-money finishes in stakes races, Ten Sent scored his long-awaited first stakes victory. The four-year-old gelding went gate
to wire in the TQHA 550 Stakes-RG3, winning the $53,500 event at Sam Houston Race Park on July 30.
Heading into this race, Ten Sent’s 2021 cam- paign had been defined by near-misses in stakes: runner-up efforts in the Harris County and Tower
of the Americas stakes, and a third-place finish in the Sam Houston 550. There was no stopping the gelding in this one, though. He broke on top from the 3-post and never looked back, opening a strong 1 1/2-length lead going into the stretch and holding off a hard-charging Dak to hit the wire first by a neck.
Ten Sent completed his 550-yard trip in :27.702, posting a 98 speed index.
Jessica Remington owns Ten Sent, who is trained by Ty Remington and had jockey Cordarellton Benn in the irons. The gray gelding posted his first win
in seven starts this year, and his third victory in 23 career outs. The $32,100 payday helped him crack the six-figure milestone in total earnings, now boast- ing a $100,628 bankroll.
Bullard Farms bred Ten Sent and owns his dam, Pink Cartel, a 2009 mare who won the 2011 Dash For Cash Juvenile Invitational at Lone Star Park.
Bullard Farms also bred Dak (Dominyun-Fleet Elis), who finished in second place for Blue Star Racing. The Brian Stroud trainee had Carlos Chacon aboard. Eye Am Tuff (Carters Cartel-Loves Easter Bunny) finished in third place under Claudio Aguilar for owner Sue Fikes and trainer Kie Mushinski.
The remaining order of finish was Ghost Bear (Phantom Menace-Loose Play TB), Steves Klassy Jess (Dash Master Jess-Haleys Comet Ride), Rivers Run Fast (Mr Jess Perry-Fast Prize Shana) and Open Zippin Diamond (One Famous Diamond-Ms Marshall Lewis).
TQHA Sires’ Cup Derby
HIS TIME TO DEAL
by Michael Compton
When the dust settled following the $89,180 Sires’ Cup Derby at Sam Houston Race
Park on Aug. 7, it was runners bred and owned by prominent Texas breeder Pete Scarmardo and trained by John Stinebaugh leading the way. Scarmardo’s homebred His Time To Deal, in an impressive effort, got the best of his stablemate Watch Him B Famous to prevail in the 400-yard event.
Ridden by Francisco Calderon, His Time To Deal bumped hard at the break, but the contact did little to deter the sorrel gelding. He opened up on the field in the lane, leading by as many as 2-lengths and he cruised to the wire a 1 3/4-length victor over Watch Him B Famous and jockey Jose Vega, who closed ground late but was clearly second best on the night. His Time
To Deal, the fastest qualifier for the race, covered the distance in :20.125 and earned a 101 speed index.
The $35,672 winner’s share of the purse increased his earnings to $98,921, and the win improved his record to 8-5(2)-0-0. His Time To Deal won the John Deere Sam Houston Juvenile Challenge-G3 at two. Bred in Texas, His Time To Deal is out of winner Lady Lilia.
Scarmardo and Stinebaugh combined for the exacta with second place finisher Watch Him B Famous (One Famous Eagle-Lady Lilia). Im Jess Dashing (Dash Master Jess-Im Not Hillary) and Luis Vivanco broke in and bumped at the start and rallied for third for owner Darrell Hooper and trainer Toby Keeton.
UR El Modelo (Hes Relentless-BG Jess Blue Bby You), Shezasecretknockout (Hez Our Secret- Adolph Tres Knockout), Eye Will Decide (Majestic Cartel-Valiant Lil Lady), River Rat (Ivory James-Oh My Tatum TB), War Eagle (One Fabulous Eagle-Caydence), Onemoreandiamgone V (Jess Lips-Velvette) and El Chocolatito (Carters Cartel- Chocolate Rabbit) followed.
TQHA 250 Stakes
JESS A DASHIN ANGELA
by John Moorehouse
Ten proved to be the lucky number for Jess A Dashin Angela. The three-year-old filly scored her first stakes victory in her 10th career out, the $55,000 TQHA 250 Stakes at Sam Houston Race Park on July 30.
The post-time favorite at nearly even-money odds, Jess A Dashin Angela made a strong drive for the wire in the 250-yard sprint. The filly broke well from the 9-post, led by a 1/2-length at the first call, then widened the gap to three-quarters by the time she hit the finish line.
Ricardo Garza-Cruz was aboard Jess A Dashin Angela as she made her stakes-winning run in :13.081, posting a 110 speed index.
Rolando Almanza trains Jess A Dashin Angela, one of three stakes winners out of his barn on the July 30 card. He also saddled Jess Eleven Or Seven, who dead- heated for first in the Miss Retama Stakes.
Cesar Rosales home-bred Jess A Dashin Angela, who notched her 3rd career victory and 2nd win of 2021. She already was stakes-placed, finishing 2nd in this year’s versions of the Sam Houston Derby-G3 & Miss Sam Houston Stakes. The $33,000 winner’s share of this purse improved her bankroll to $145,760.
Rosales bred Jess A Dashin Angela out of stakes winner Mi Angela.
Pa Cha Ching (Tempting Dash-Toole N Round) finished second for owners Robert Armor, Samuel Henderson, and Helen Henderson. The John Stinebaugh trainee had Jose Martinez in the irons. Chief Lark (Chief Corona-Pie Opener) took third place for owner Mario G. Rodriguez, and trainer Martin Rodriguez, and had Victor Urieta Jr. aboard.
The remaining order of finish was Nikola (Five Bar Cartel-Ms Tesla Jess), Easy Blinkers (Dealagame-Wide Open Effort), All About the Kiss (Kiss My Hocks-All About Tonight), Dash N Leader (Down N Dash-Cartel Leader), I Got Daddys Eyes (The Louisiana Cartel-Eye Agree), Alamitos Dreams (Hes Relentless-Kittyna) and Zef Garcia Seis (Here Is The Son-Zef Special Seis).
