OTHER WORLD
by Tracy Gantz
Going into the $25,000 Jens L. List Jr. Memorial California Breeders’ Stakes at Los Alamitos
on Aug. 1, Other World had won back-to-back
allowance races. That caught the attention of owner- trainer Valentin Zamudio, who purchased him privately from owner/breeder Dr. Ed Allred, a trans- action that paid off when Other World triumphed in the Jens List.
Sent away as the 13-10 favorite with jockey Ruben Lozano in the irons, Other World bumped slightly with Katella Avenue to his outside as the gate opened. It was minor, and he recovered quickly to vie for the lead. Other World staved off his rivals to score by a 1/2-length in :19.944 for 400 yards.
Other World had started 14 times prior to Zamudio’s purchase. The gelding had broken his maiden in January after placing five times at two.
Allred bred Other World in California from his homebred Thoroughbred mare Celestial Being, a daughter of millionaire Thoroughbred In Excess and the winner of her only two starts. The mare
has produced nine winners from 11 starters. Most have been Thoroughbreds, but they also include the stakes-placed Quarter Horse Trial Of Faith.
Diego Herrera rode Favorite Fly (Favorite Cartel- Get Up N Fly) to second for owners Jose Pantoja
and Daniel Reynoso and trainer Clement Hurtado. Favorite Fly broke his maiden in May and has placed in an allowance race.
Dr. Steve Burns’ homebred Katella Avenue (Foose-Katie Katella) ran third. Victor Salazar rode the gelding for trainer Mike Casselman. Katella Avenue broke his maiden in March and has placed in an allowance race.
Completing the field were Hi High Hopes (Favorite Cartel-Brighterthanthesun), Fly The Coup (Favorite Cartel-Babe On The Fly) and Walking Alone (Seperate Interest-Sex On Fire).
California Breeders Sprint S.
YOU CAN RUN
by Tracy Gantz
You Can Run kept getting close in stakes without a victory until the $25,000 California Breeders Sprint Stakes at Los Alamitos on July 31. He still cut it close, but this time he reached the wire first.
Regular rider Jesus Ayala was aboard for the 350- yard Sprint. They motored out to the lead quickly from the rail, never letting anyone get past them. You Can Run held off his rivals to score by a neck in :17.421.
Mike Casselman trains You Can Run for owner- breeder Dr. Steve Burns. You Can Run was winning his fifth race. He ran second in the 2020 Los Alamitos Winter Derby-G1 and 2019 Los Alamitos Juvenile Invitational and third in the 2020 Golden State Derby-G2.
Burns bred You Can Run in California out of
his homebred stakes-placed mare You Can Fly, also trained by Casselman. You Can Fly has produced three starters, all winners, including stakes-placed Opt Out. The second dam, stakes-placed Babe On the Fly, has produced Grade 1 winners Rock You and Little Talks.
Raul Valenzuela rode Cattail Cove (Favorite Cartel-Katie Katella) to second for owner Ralph Link Newcomb and trainer Juan Aleman. Cattail Cove finished second in the 2019 Los Alamitos $2 Million Futurity-G1 and third in the 2019 Governor’s Cup Futurity-RG2 and 2020 All American Invitational Stakes.
Pesky (Favorite Cartel-Quirky), ridden by Cruz Mendez, trained by Jose Flores, and owned by Juniors Quarter Horses Inc., finished third. The 4-year-old gelding ran second in the 2020 A Ransom Handicap and the 2019 Golden State Juvenile Stakes.
Completing the field were Black Fryday (Favorite Cartel-Ruths Chris), Chicks Fayvorite (Favorite Cartel-Chicks Tell) and Stolen Lives (Seperate Interest-Enjoy The Walk). Just Be Real was scratched.
Oneida County Derby
PATTYS SAINT
by Michael Cusortelli
Sent to post as the 1-5 favorite in a field of seven sophomores, Robert L. Harrison’s Pattys Saint responded with a wire-to-wire victory in the $15,000 Oneida County Derby on Aug. 8.
Pattys Saint covered 300 yards in :15.449, and her winning margin was 3/4-length from Teller Its Lightning. Jesus Virgen rode the homebred brown daughter of the Feature Mr Jess stallion Jess Got Easier for trainer Heath Hillman.
Pattys Saint earned a 93 speed index and the $6,836 winner’s share of a $15,000 purse. The filly was bred in Idaho, and she is out of SP Saint Patty, a Utah-bred daughter of the Check Him Out stallion Saint Shackleton. Her second dam, Private Hawkeye, is an unraced daughter of 2000 Champion 2 Year Old Eyesa Special.
Pattys Saint traces back to her sixth dam, Royal Black Willow, a daughter of the Depth Charge stallion Royal Charge who won two stakes in 1972, including the Spring Fever Derby at Pocatello Downs.
Campaigned in two states, including Wyoming, Pattys Saint has won seven of 11 starts -- including four stakes -- and she has banked $54,159. She won two futurities during her 2-year-old season, includ- ing the 350-yard $42,500 Wyoming Horse Racing Open Futurity at Sweetwater Downs.
