Sweetwater Derby
A TRACE OF LANE
by John Moorehouse
After entering black type in her most recent out, A Trace Of Lane scored her first stakes victory on Aug. 21 at Sweetwater Downs, winning the $15,000 Sweetwater Derby by 3/4-length.
Trained by Alvaro Torres, A Trace Of Lane finished the 400-yard race in :20.180, registering an 89 speed index.
The filly broke well in second and led at every subsequent call to score the victory.
The stakes win produced a $7,500 payday, increasing the filly’s career bankroll to $29,511. More than $21,000 of that has been captured dur- ing her sophomore campaign.
Nate Johnson home-bred the three-year-old filly, who reached the winner’s circle for the fourth time in 15 total starts. All four of those victories have come this year, and in the span of the past six outs, following a nine-race winless streak to begin her career.
A Trace Of Lane previously finished third in the Renegade Sports Derby at Wyoming Downs, but left little doubt in this one.
Jockey Gerardo Vera brought her out of the No. 2 gate and into the lead by a head at the first call in the Sweetwater Derby. The filly opened up a 1/2-length advantage as she entered the stretch, widening the gap during the final yards.
A Trace Of Lane also owns a 3/4-length win
in the Wyoming Downs Renegade Sports Derby trials. She broke her maiden in June of this year in a maiden event, covering 330-yards wire-to-wire to win that one by a nec. She then won her next start in an allowance event, again going wire-to-wire to score a nose victory.
Johnson also co-owns 2-time winner Lanes Legend, the dam of A Trace Of Lane.
Oh Mi Honey (Turbulent Times-Mi Stoli),
a winner of The 89 And Under Stakes and the post-time favorite, settled for second this time for Michael Isom. The Riley Moosman trainee had Jesus Valenzuela in the irons.
Stakes finalist Zoomin Moonflash (First Moonflash-Zoomin Follies) placed third for owner/ trainer Rick Hillstead. Jockey Jacquelyn Bobroff did the riding.
Rounding out the order of finish, Flashin Ember (First Moonflash-Episode Of Fire) was fourth, followed by Volcums Hot Candy (Volcom- Candy Cartels Cat), Suite Josephine (Apollitical Jess-Christie Jo Dash), and Cady Shack Creek (Maknmoves-Echo Creek Canyon).

on the organization of the 36th
Annual Select Auction of Yearlings, sched- uled for Oct. 12, 13 and 14 at the facili- ties of the Hipodromo de las Americas in Mexico City.
The sale catalog is in the process of completion, but so far it is known that 632 Quarter Horse yearlings are registered, a new record number of consignments that each year increases consistently, which dem- onstrates the quality of Mexican breeding presenting more and better colts.
In 2020, this auction was not held because of health issues due to the COVID- 19 pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2, which today prevails in its so-called “third wave”, but the decision to hold the sale this year has been upheld by taking all the precautions dictated by the health authorities.
This sale is undoubtedly the main event that brings together most of those
involved in the Quarter Horse industry
in Mexico.
