WOODYS GOLD
by Michael Compton
After finishing second in a pair of futuri- ties over the summer, Woodys Gold nabbed one of his own with an eye-catching victory in the $375,559 New Mexico State Fair Futurity-RG3 at The Downs at Albuquerque on Sept. 20.
Runner-up in the Zia Futurity-RG1 on July 26 and the Mountain Top New Mexico Bred Futurity-RG1 on June 13, Woodys Gold was not going to be denied in his latest futurity try.
Ridden by Francisco Calderon, Woodys Gold darted to the front of the 400-yard event at the start. He lengthened his advantage from there, powering home to win as he pleased by 1 1/4-lengths. He stopped the timer in :19.649 in the dominating effort, earning a 90 speed index as the even-money race favorite.
It was the initial stakes score - done in wire- to-wire fashion - of the precocious gelding’s young career and his third win overall from six starts. The $187,779 winner’s share of the purse increased his earnings to $325,282 for owner
