Valley Junction Futurity-G3
PAINT ME BROWN
by Tracy Gantz
When jockey Oscar Delgado had other obligations for the trials of the Valley Junction Futurity-G3 at Prairie Meadows, he recommended Uriel Cervantes to trainer Jose Aguirre for Paint Me Brown.
“That horse was initially for Oscar Delgado, who I want to thank for being a good friend to me,” said Cervantes, who also thanked Aguirre for the opportunity to ride Paint Me
Brown. “I didn’t have anything
in trials but that one. But like I’ve
said from the beginning, if it’s
meant to be, you only need one.”
Cervantes made the most
of his lone mount, riding Paint Me Brown to victory in his Sept. 4 trial and qualifying the third fastest. The team returned for the $218,640 final, coming on strongly from fourth early to win by 3/4-lengths in :17.871 for 350 yards, posting an 87 speed index.

“I knew he had it in him—I was just hop- ing he knew it too,” said Cervantes. “He broke sharp, but there was a bunch who broke sharp. But once he got on the bit and got going, I knew he was going to do something amazing.”
Aguirre trains Paint Me Brown for owner Porfirio Carrasco. With other trainers, the bay colt was unplaced in his first two starts.
This victory was worth the $87,456 winner’s share, boosting the gelding’s total bankroll to $91,776.
Flag Ranch LLC bred Paint Me Brown out of Brown Eye Suze, who finished second in the 2009 Buttons and Bows Stakes at Albuquerque. The mare has produced 10 winners from 11 starters, including graded stakes winner Suze Returns and stakes-placed Return Of Brown Eyes.
Gail and Michael Ahern’s homebred Easy Separatist (Separatist-Easy Downhill) finished second. Jorge Torres rode the filly for trainer Stacy Charette-Hill. Easy Separatist has never finished worse than third in five starts.
Brenda Reiswig’s homebred Shadi Lady (Valiant Hero-Seis The Royal Cash) ran third under jockey Jonathan Dominguez for trainer Clinton Crawford. The filly broke her maiden at Canterbury Park and ran second in an allowance event at Prairie Meadows in four prior starts.
Completing the field were Purty Darn Quick (Jess Louisiana Blue-Now Margaret), Apollitical J Flash (Apollitical Jess-Julias Perfection), Not A Secret (Hez Our Secret-Call As Maybe), Peves Blue Duck (Moonin The Eagle-Ima Lazie Too) and
Fly Miss Corona Jess (Apollitical Jess-Fly Miss Corona). Signs Of A Blue Moon and Synergized were scratched.
second in the Iowa Stallion Derby, Cyclone Derby and Jim Bader Futurity.
Our War Hero (Valiant Hero-Tell Her Shes Queen) came into the finals with the fifth fast- est qualifying time. He stepped up his game
to finish in third place under Jorge Torres for owner Summer Hill Farm LLC and trainer Clinton Crawford. The gelding was also third in this year’s Cyclone Derby and was a finalist in the Jim Bader Futurity last year.
CR Hez The Man (Heza Fast Dash-LW Evening Lajolla), TS Dash To The End (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Dash Of Perry), Kiss Me Anywhere (Kiss My Hocks-Paint Me Anywhere), Edith Anne (Mighty B Valiant-Rodeo Rona) and Queens Dashing Eagle (One Dashing Eagle-Queen Of Anywhere) completed the order of finish.
