Keokuk Stakes-G3
FERRARIJAMES
by Michael Compton
Multiple graded stakes winner Ferrari James made it two wins in the last three years in the $35,000 Keokuk Stakes at Prairie Meadows with a
game victory in the 2020 renewal on Aug. 29. Ridden by Jorge Torres, Ferrari James raced in 8th position in the stretch of the 350-yard test but
flew home late with a strong late surge between foes. With a powerful kick, he got up in time to defeat JK Wildcat Red by a nose, stopping the timer in :17.509. The final clocking earned a 98 speed index.
The veteran 7-year-old campaigner finished second in the race last year, and won it in 2018. He entered the Keokuk stakes winless in three outings this year, but the classy runner rediscovered his best stride in time to notch his first score of the season.
Trained by Alex Wessels for owner Alfredo Botello, Ferrari James now has a race record of 38-14(5)-8(3)-3(2) in a sensational career. The $20,100 winner’s share of the purse increased his bankroll to $335,759.
Weetona Stanley and W.E. Smith bred Ferrari James out of lightly raced Ferarri Fast Prize. She has produced 15 winners from 26 starters, including five stakes placed. Ferrari James is her first stakes winner.
JK Wildcat Red (One Dashing Eagle-Shaky Girl) was second under Jonathan Dominguez for owner Regina Laymon and trainer Kenny Laymon. Graded stakes winner Three Olives N Smoke (Jess Louisiana Blue-Smokin Corona) was third under jockey Eugenio Navarrete Jr. for owners Margo Schares and Brad Thomas and trainer John Hammes.

It should come as no surprise that multiple stakes winner Faster Than Hasta may have found a new home competing at the marathon distance of 870
yards. The 6-year-old gelding and a veteran of 32 career starts is now 3-for-3 at the 870-yard trip after a victory in the $25,000 Covered Bridges Stakes-G3 at Prairie Meadows on Sept. 25.
Piloted by Brett Birzer, Faster Than Hasta flashed good speed away from the gate and raced in second position between foes early. He surged to the lead in the stretch to prevail by 3/4-lengths at the wire. Trained by Robert Johnson, he stopped the timer in :46.019, earning a speed index of 92.
The $14,250 winner’s share of the purse increased his bankroll to $217,917 for owner John Johnson. His record now stands at 32-10(5)-6(2)-0 and numbered among his wins are stakes tallies in the John Deere Prairie Meadows Juvenile Challenge, the Adequan Prairie Meadows Derby Challenge, and the MQHRA Stallion Auction Futurity.
Faster Than Hasta is produced by Leadmetoyourladder, which makes him a full brother to stakes winner and distance specialist Hastabealeader. Wardell Quarter Horses bred him in Wyoming.
Runner-up Holy Storm (Red Storm Cat-Holy White Socks TB) dueled with the winner early and finished a game second under Alex Canchari. The gelding is owned by Daniel Kjorsvik and trained by Patrick Swan.
Going to Hollywood (Heza Fast Dash-Alcea TB) and jockey Ronald Hisby finished in third for owner Matt Frazier and trainer Randall Weidner.
Flight To La Jolla (Hiclass La Jolla-I Fly American), One Sweet Step (One Sweet Jess- Stepperupper TB), Hollyhook (Game Patriot- Hollyhocks TB), High On Chablis (High Rate Of Return), and Edelman (Favorite Cartel-Katie Katella) followed.

Sent to post at odds of 8-1 in a field of nine state-bred distaffers, Jeff State’s Streakin Jesszee responded with a 1-length victory in the $55,000 Future of Iowa Stakes at Prairie Meadows on Sept. 26. Streakin Jesszee covered 350 yards in :17.941 while racing against a reported 20-mph head wind. Berkley Packer rode the filly for trainer Alex Wessels. Streakin Jesszee earned $25,300 from her first career stakes win. The filly was coming off a fourth- place finish in a 350-yard second-level allowance- optional claiming ($15,000).
Campaigned exclusively at Prairie Meadows, Streakin Jesszee has won four of 12 outs and she has banked $72,896. The filly’s resume includes third- place runs in the 2018 Jim Bader Futurit, and the 350-yard $25,000 Cy-Hawk Stakes on July 18.
Streakin Jesszee was bred by Joe B. Allen and Dallas Blakley. She is out of Golly Zee, a homebred daughter who won the first division of the 110-yard Texas Twister Stakes at Sam Houston Race Park in 2011. She has produced four winners from six start- ers. Streakin Jesszee is her second stakes winner.
Kays Dynasty (FDD Dynasty-Real Royal Down), an 11-1 longshot, ran second and pocketed $9,900 for her owner, Kay J. Sage. Jorge Torres rode the homebred mare for trainer Alex Wessels.
Tom Lepic’s The Polar Vortex (Carters Cartel- Signs Zoomer), the even-money favorite, ran third, 1 1/2-lengths behind Streakin Jesszee. Jonathan Dominguez rode the homebred mare for trainer Jason Olmstead.
Apollitical Queen (Apollitical Jess-Heros Queen) finished fourth and was followed by Shesa Favorite Gal (Favorite Cartel-Shesa Eye Of Rose), Blind Spot Bandit (Jess Louisiana Blue-Especially Lavish), Lil Kool Lips (Lil Kool Wagon-Imindy), and Sweet Game Chick (Sweet First Down- Beduinos Game Chick).
