When the gates opened for the All American Futurity-G1 finals, the track bias was gone as they were all on equal footing. It was HR Princess Jess and Caliente Caramelo getting the early call. Famous And Easy got going, but then Whistle Stop Cafe started to pull away with Instygator alongside in what appeared might be a match race. But jockey Ricky Ramirez, telling post-race reporters that about 100 yards out she “hit another gear,” pulled away to win by a neck over Instygator. The win gave Whistle Stop Cafe the $1.5 million of the $3 million purse for the All American Futurity-G1. This brings her total earnings for the year to $1,974,986 from six wins in six starts.
Bobby D. Cox is like many in that he started with one horse. His first racehorse was Peter Pistola, a Thoroughbred from the claiming ranks. Cox owned and raced Peter Pistola in 1976. He made 20 starts with two wins, two seconds and five thirds earning $7,470.06. Peter Pistola showed speed by running 5 1/2 furlongs at Sunland Park in a time of 1:05.
It didn’t take long for Bobby Cox to become involved with breeding good racehorses, specializing in racing American Quarter Horses. It was in about 1979 that he established Winner Maker Farms near Odessa, Texas. It was during this time that Winner Maker stood such stallions as Zevi, Merganser, By Yawl, Special Task and Make Mine Bud. The next big change for the
Cox breeding program came in 2007, when the hub of the operation moved to Cox Ranch and the Sweetwater Land and Cattle Company of Peaster, Texas, with Bill Melson serving as the general manager.
Bobby D. Cox is now the breeder of horses that have earned in excess of $31 million and the owner of horses that have earned in excess of $10 million. He is #3 on these two leading money earning lists. His successful runners include All About Ease, winner of the 2004 Ruidoso Futurity-G1, Dont Let Down, winner of the 2007 All American Derby-G1, and Brimmerton, winner of the 2004 Rainbow Derby-G1 and All American Derby-G1.
Filly All About Ease, gelding Dont Let Down and the stallion Brimmerton represent the Cox Ranch breeding program and its outstanding set of broodmares. Dont Let Down is out of Babe On The Beach, a Cox race mare with a stakes win in the Costa Mesa Handicap and a second place finish in the Golden State Futurity-G1. She became a Cox
