BABES FABULOUS EAGLE
by Danny Camp
Babes Fabulous Eagle gave a fabulous performance in the $26,178 South Valley Futurity at Laurel Brown Racetrack on June 20. The gelding shot from
the 5-post with a fabulous start. Ridden by Cesar Moreno, Babes Fabulous Eagle never relinquished his lead, crossing the wire by a neck in a wire-to-wire victory. They completed the 330 yards in :16.892, which was good for a 99 speed index.
Babes Fabulous Eagle’s first victory brought home a $10,471 payday for owner Merlin Sharp
and trainer Monty Arrossa. Babes Fabulous Eagle’s only other start comes from his June 7 trial where he qualified with the ninth fastest time.
Darling Farms bred Babes Fabulous Eagle out
of unraced Gone Babie Gone, a half-sister to Turf Paradise Juvenile Challenge winner Bringin It On and Desert Classic Derby winner Sweet Babie James. The gelding is her only foal. His second dam is Already In Love, runner-up in the Desert Classic Derby.
Fastest qualifier Coronado Kiss (Coronado Cartel-Sixteen Kisses) made up enough ground to bank second place money. Owned by Andrea & Eddie Jensen, the gelding had Eric Ayala aboard for trainer Monty Arrossa.
Picture Esque (Favorite Cartel-Sweetest Illusion) finished third under Uriel Dominguez for owner Melody Olsen and trainer Glade Van Tassell. The filly’s only other start comes from her second place finish in the June 7 trials where she qualified with the second fastest time.
KDB Thisdashhasstyle (Stylalistic- Sleeplessinsyracuse), Apollitical Azurfame (Apollitical Jess-Fames QTPI), GG Hollywood (Hollywoodbobs Summer-DC Cash), PCR Dashn Flash (Flattery Swinginjess-Dashn Slinky Gal) and Transpiring (Foose-Proud Checker) completed the order of finish. Fighting Mad, Go Petitti and TW Gyspy Cartel were scratched.
Born Runner Classic
BEACH CARTEL
by Michael Compton
Beach Cartel’s younger foes in the $84,100 Born Runner Classic Stakes at Indiana Downs on June 18, had nothing on the 8-year-old veteran making
the 34th appearance of his racing career in the 400- yard feature.
Ridden by Samuel Mendez, Sheri Miller’s homebred gray gelding enjoyed a clean trip from the start. He broke on top, lengthened his advantage in the lane and posted a 1/2-length victory at odds of 9-1 over stablemate Beach Mercedes, also owned and bred by Miller. Finishing in Beach Cartel’s wake was 2019 Indiana Quarter Horse of the Year Beach Treat, who crossed the finish line in sixth as the even- money race favorite. He was, however, ultimately disqualified from sixth and placed tenth.
In winning for the 16th time and for the second time in the Born Runner Classic, Beach Cartel stopped the timer in :19.880, earning a 93 speed index. Trainer Randy Smith also sent out the runner- up, Beach Mercedes (Escondido Beach-Jess Alive Bully) who was piloted by Shanley Jackson. The win boosted Beach Cartel’s career bankroll to $449,908.
Miller bred Beach Cartel out of lightly raced Flashin Dee Dee. She has produced nine winners from 10 starters, including Indiana Grand Classic winner Beach Runner. Beach Cartel is her second stakes winner and top earner.
Finishing third for owner/breeder/trainer Randy Thompson was stakes winner Abe (Jazz Be First- Magics Born Illusion) with jockey Edgar Diaz aboard.
Beach Bum Eddie (Escondido Beach-Carman Copy), Kitty Sixup (Sixes Liaison-Keens Cat), The Ebony Hare (Bug Among Thorns-Babys Rabbit), Nacho Binez (Habits Secret-Chikita Espesial), Rubys Stone (Brimmstone-Run N Ruby), First Habits (Habits Secret-Balenciaga) and Beach Treat (Escondido Beach- Treat Me to Cash) completed the order of finish. RC Rayo and WH Design By Dash scratched.

Cam Casby Stakes
POLAR XPRESS
by Tracy Gantz
Polar Xpress is a solid runner who almost always earns a check. But the 5-year-old mare had not been able to collect a stakes victory until the $20,000
Cam Casby Stakes at Canterbury Park on June 10. Trainer Jason Olmstead had three runners in the
race, including Dickey Bob, the odds-on favorite, and Polar Xpress, the third choice at 5-1. Dickey Bob broke slowly, never was in contention, and finished last.
Meanwhile, jockey Marcus Swiontek got Polar Xpress away in good order. They quickly flew to the lead, and Polar Xpress held off Haute Wagon by a neck for the victory in :15.573 for 300 yards.
Summer Run Inc. races Polar Xpress and bred her in Minnesota. In 2017, Polar Xpress finished third in the Minnesota Futurity, and she ran fourth in the Minnesota Derby the following year.
Zoomshakalaka, the dam of Polar Xpress, started only twice and did not place. She has produced four winners from six starters, including Fantasticazoom Jr, winner of the 2020 Harrah’s Dash Stakes, Swift Stakes, and Leverne Perry Memorial Stakes, and stakes-placed Sr Ur Fired
Shelly Berkner’s homebred Haute Wagon (Wagons West-Chicks Timeto Fling) finished sec- ond. Ismael Ricardo rode the 4-year-old gelding for trainer Vic Hanson. Haute Wagon finished second in the 2018 Minnesota Stallion Breeders’ Futurity.
Olmstead also trained third-place PYC Jess Bite Mydust (Apollitical Jess-Paint Or More), a homebred for Lunderborg LLC. Denny Velazquez rode the 6-year-old gelding, who has won five stakes through- out his career.
Completing the field were Fire N Guns (Freighttrain B-Garters N Guns), Streak N Sparks (Azoom-Streak N Sierra), Johnee B (Separatist-Little Miss Hempness) and Dickey Bob (Apollitical Jess- Paint Or More).
