Expo Square Stakes
BUBBA BAD
by John Moorehouse
Bubba Bad was pretty darn good, running away with his first-ever stakes victory in the $19,150 Expo Square Stakes at Fair Meadows on
June 20.
Ray Enlow home-bred and trains the four-year-
old gelding, who was making his 19th career out.
He tallied his fifth win overall and his second of the 2020 campaign. This also marked his debut in stakes company, and he made the most of it.
With Daniel Torres in the irons, Bubba Bad broke from the 4-post and led by a head at the first call. He quickly gained distance from a field filled with distance specialists. Bubba Bad led by 1-length as he entered the stretch then exploded away from any would-be challengers, opening up a separation of 4 1/2-lengths by the time he crossed the wire.
The stakes-winning trip took :46.758, registering an 85 speed index and bringing home an $11,892 payday. That increased Bubba Bad’s lifetime earn- ings to $64,297.
Enlow also owns Bubba Bad’s dam, Dashin Di. This lightly-raced 2005 mare has produced 100% money earners from five starters. Bubba Bad is her first stakes winner.
Eye M Smokin (Rock Solid Jess-Chicks Fleye) finished second for owner Sheila Dorgan and trainer Luz Chavira. Rolando Raudales had the riding assignment.
My Bucket is Full (Prospect To The Top-Kellies Feature) hit the board in third under Brett Birzer. The gelding is owned by Fred Danley and trained by Tana Caldwell.
Candyman Dash (Cartels Candy Man-Peekaboo Dash), Cold Brewster (Im A Fancy PYC-Crescent Store TB), FDS Of Seattle (First Down Straw-Talk Of Seattle TB) and Weapon First Bug (Pappasito- War Weapon) completed the field. FDS Of Seattle won this event last year.
Belles Stakes
SPLENDID CAUSE
by John Moorehouse
Veteran mare Splendid Cause charged to her sec- ond stakes win, taking first place in the $15,000 Belles Stakes held June 27 at Fair Meadows.
Making her 36th overall out, Splendid Cause got to the winner’s circle for the second time this year and the seventh time in her career. It marked her first vic- tory in stakes company since November of 2017, when she won the Golden State Juvenile at Los Alamitos.
A Dee Keener trainee, Splendid Cause looked sharp on her latest stakes-winning run. After getting away from the gates, she led by a head at the first call, maintained that narrow separation entering the stretch, they pulled away to hit the wire first by a 1/2-length margin. The 350-yard trip took :17.871, registering an 87 speed index and bringing home an $11,892 payday that boosted her total earnings to $148,837.
Kelly Yother Equine LLC owns and home-bred Splendid Cause, who had finished second in the Easy Date Stakes-RG2 earlier this year.
Juan Pulido was aboard Splendid Cause, who
is one of three stakes winners out of Answer The Dream. Kelly and Yother also own Answer The Dream, a 2005 mare with two stakes wins of her own—both restricted or graded. The other stakes winners in the brood include Empty Arms and Dreams Devine—both half-sisters to Splendid Cause.
Marmalade Candy (Cartels Candy Man- Marmalade Lady) finished second for Manuel Olguin-Romero in her first stakes race. The Oscar Nunez trainee had Gonzalo Valles, Jr., in the irons.
Relentless Jessie (Hes Relentless-Jess A Queen) placed third for owner/trainer Manuel Francisco Mata. Daniel Torres did the riding.
The remaining order of finish was Miss Fly On Tac (Tac It Like A Man-Peek To Fly), Fly N Tell (Coronado Cartel-Strawfly Sister), Jessie Marie (Spit Curl Jess-Traffic Wagon) and Im Jess Fast (Apollitical Jess-Bossanova Baby).
Vandys Flash Handicap
UP AND COMING
by Tracy Gantz
Up And Coming has proved a good buy at $67,000 out of the 2018 Los Alamitos Equine Sale. Racing for La Feliz Montana Ranch LLC
and MRB Racing LLC and trained by Christopher O’Dell, Up And Coming added the Vandys Flash Handicap at Los Alamitos to his record June 28.
“He’s a hard-knocking horse,” said O’Dell. “He’s been a good investment.”
Up And Coming went off as the 4-1 third choice in the seven-horse Vandys Flash field. Ridden by Eduardo Nicasio, he broke second behind odds-on favorite John Carter Cash. Up And Coming dueled with that rival and edged him by a neck in :19.821 for 400 yards, posting a 91 speed index.
The $13,750 winner’s share of the purse boosted the gelding’s total lifetime earnings to $90,561 He now has a race record of 12-7(2)-0(0)-1(1), including a victory in the James S Smith Memorial earlier this year.
Dr. Ed Allred bred Up And Coming out of Hits Keep Coming, who has produced Up And Coming and one other starter, winner Rolling Along. Stakes- placed Chickasis, the second dam, has produced such stakes winners as Hot Hitter and Hard Hitting, as well as the dam of World Champion Freaky.
Jose Nicasio rode John Carter Cash (Carters Cartel-One Fast Trick) to second for owner Juan Ramos Dorantes and trainer Valentin Zamudio. John Carter Cash was coming off a win in the Dillingham.
Allred’s homebred Doctor Gene (Favorite Cartel- Dont Pass Bar) finished third. Vinnie Bednar piloted Doctor Gene for trainer Scott Willoughby. Doctor Gene had won two of six previous races.
