his overall record to 22-9-4-0, and the $52,860 winner’s share of the purse increased his lifetime bankroll to $142,497. In addition to his recent victory, Dance The Dust Off also captured this year’s Wyoming Downs Distance Challenge Stakes in June and finished fourth in the Will Rogers Distance Challenge Stakes-G3 on Oct. 2.
The win proved to be an emotional family affair for the Teeters, who have had the gelding since his career began. “It’s such a special win and my daughter owns the horse, too,” said Nakia Teeter. “It’s incredible. I don’t think it has truly set in yet what this horse has done for us.
“We were hoping that last race would set him up for this one,” she added. “I think it worked out great. He is a closer, so where they had to set up the starting gate on the backside didn’t give those speed horses much time to get out in front of him before we started going around the turn. He was able to stay pretty close. I knew when there were only three in front of me when we hit the lane, if he would close like I know he can, then he was going to gather them up.”
Bred in New Mexico by Sarah Donaldson Rioux, Dance The Dust Off is out of the 2001 Thoroughbred mare Magic Yard, a three-time winner during her racing career.
“I take care of him every day,” Nakia said of Dance The Dust Off. “He is my boy. He really puts on a show when it’s race day. When people come look at him at the barn, they don’t know it’s him because he blows himself up so big. He has a lot of human characteristics. He knows
he’s a racehorse and he knows what race day is. He just loves to run.”
Nicos First Cartel (First Prize Perry-Cartel Moon), ridden by Jansen Melancon, offered game chase throughout and held the place
spot for owner Erica Carreon and trainer Jesus Carrete. The stakes-winning 6-year-old gelding was bred in Arizona by Fernando Canales.
Shockinglyfamous (One Famous Eagle- Shocktime TB) and jockey Cody Wainscott pressed the pace early and held third for
owners Stone Chase Stables and Kasey Willis, who also trains the bay colt. The multiple stakes winner was bred in Texas by Clarence Scharbauer III.
Wascallywittlewabbit (Heza Motor Scooter-Rabbits N Diamonds), Hi High Hopes (Favorite Cartel-Brighterthanthesun), Cold Brewster (Im a Fancy PYC-Crescent Shore-TB), and Roc Starr (Rock Solid Jess- Saigon Lady) completed the order of finish. Kaul Me Dashetta was scratched.
