  Blane Schvaneveldt Handicap
OLD SCHOOL ICON
by Tracy Gantz
Martha “Mimi” Wells was a familiar figure at Los Alamitos, always happy when one of her homebreds won. The recipient of the 2000 Frank
Vessels Sr. Memorial Award for her outstanding contribution to the sport, Wells died Sept. 11 at age 75. Three weeks later, her homebred gelding Old School Icon won his first stakes, the Blane Schvaneveldt Handicap at Los Alamitos on Oct. 1.
Just a year ago, Wells had stood in the Los Alamitos winner’s circle after her homebred Chicks Fayvorite won the same race and received the trophy from her longtime friend, Shirley Schvaneveldt. Old School Icon now competes in the name of Wells Racing LLC. With Henry Lopez aboard, Old School Icon dueled with Boondarbian throughout the 400 yards, prevailing by
a head in :20.039. He earned an 85 speed index and the $19,250 winner’s share of the $35,000 purse.
Matthew Fales trains the Arizona-bred
gelding, who has placed in seven other stakes. Blane Schvaneveldt bred Chicks Tell, the second dam of Old School Icon, and Wells raced that mare throughout her career, to a win in the 2002 Huntington Beach Handicap. Wells bred unraced Cozie Fire, the dam of Old School Icon, and the mare has produced four winners from five starters.
Jerald and Lacie Davenport’s homebred Boondarbian (Jr Dynasty Mountain-Splash Talk) finished second under jockey Juan Leon. John Cooper trains the three-year-old gelding.
Edward and Von Zae McNelis’ homebred My Game Plan (One Sweet Jess-Rumpled Britches) ran third under jockey Armando Cervantes. The 3-year- old gelding is trained by Monty Arrossa. My Game Plan won three consecutive races earlier this year.
Too Sass For You (Favorite Cartel-First Down Sass) and Soul Sister (FDD Dynasty-Heart An Soul) finished fourth and fifth. Chicks Fayvorite was scratched.
