BHR LIGHT MY SPARK
Bby Emily Paulk
HR Light My Spark scored his first stakes
victory in the $15,000 Fort Pierre South Dakota Bred Derby on Oct. 2.
Ridden by Timothy Tarasenco, the black gelding broke in fourth from the three-post, but was in first at the first call. He made a driving finish to cross the wire a neck in front.
Running for trainer Robert Johnson, BHR Light My Spark completed the 250 yards in :13.785, while posting an 82 speed index.
BHR Light My Spark also secured the first place check of $7,500, which boosted his total lifetime earnings to $21,106. This stakes race marks BHR Light My Spark’s second victory from 13 starts. His first came in 2021 in a maiden claiming race at Prairie Meadows.
Owner/breeder Broken Heart Ranch bred
the gelding out of multiple winner BHR Guys Flash Me, winner of the 2014 Minnesota Stallion Breeders’ Futurity. The mare is a full sister to 2013 South Dakota Bred Futurity winner BHR Light My Fire and 2018 Minnesota Stallion Breeders’ Futurity winner BHR Flashing Effort.
BHR Light My Spark is the first starter out of BHR Guys Flash Me. The second dam is BHR Missy Special, who finished third in the 2003 South Dakota Bred Futurity and produced three winners, all stakes winners.
Also trained by Robert Johnson, Hasta Be Relentless (Hes Relentless-Diva Dynasty) broke on top, but settled for second place. Ridden by Brian Beetem, the colt is owned by Bob and Gary Johnson and was coming off a finalist finish in the Prairie Meadows Derby Challenge in September. He was also a finalist in the Dan Lockie Derby earlier this year and ran third in last year’s South Dakota Bred Futurity.
Welcometathadarkside (Darkelly-Famous Wildone) ran a steady and even race in third to collect the $2,250 share of the purse for owner Thomas L. Anderberg. The colt was ridden
by Larren Delhome for trainer Bill Geditz. Welcometathadarkside has placed in two of his five starts thus far in his freshman year.
Also owned by Thomas L. Anderberg and trained by Bill Geditz, Deal Me A Jess (First
Down Mr Jess-Eyema Game Dealer) finished in fourth place under Eric Snodgrass. The filly won the Chippewa Derby earlier this year and was a runner-up in last year’s South Dakota Bred Futurity and in the 1889 Futurity.

rickn Wagon secured his place among stakes
winners with a victory in the $15,000 Fort Pierre South Dakota Bred Futurity on Oct. 1 at the track in Pierre, South Dakota.
The two-year-old brown gelding broke from the inside post in third place under jockey Eric Snodgrass. He promptly moved his way into the lead by the top of the stretch in the 250-yard event.
With WB Dashing Brat closing in, Trickn Wagon kept to the task and crossed the wire to win by a neck.
Earning a career best 85 speed index, Trickn Wagon completed the distance in :13.713.
The $7,500 winner’s share of the purse boosted his current bankroll to $15,280 and he now has won or placed in four of his five starts.
Trickn Wagon’s previous victory came in
the North Dakota Horse Park Futurity at North Dakota Horse Park on July 23. In that race, he had 3-lenghts at the top of the stretch and won the event in wire-to-wire fashion by 2 1/4-lenghts.
Coming into this stake event, Trickn Wagon was coming off of a seventh-place finish in the 1889 Futurity at Canterbury Park. He had a tough go of it in that race after clipping heels and swerving in
at the break.
In his first victory on July 15 at North Dakota Horse Park, Trickn Wagon made another wire-to- wire run in a 300-yard maiden event, winning that one by 2 1/4-lengths.
His first start was on June 25 at Chippewa Downs where he finished second by just 1/2-length in a game debut.
Bill Geditz is the owner/breeder/trainer of the gelding and bred him out of unraced Trickarita. She has produced 100% winners from two starters with Trickn Wagon being her first stakes winner.
Robert Johnson trained the remaining three horses, starting with WB Dashing Brat (Mr Apollitical Dash-Bratina), who just missed in second under Timothyn Tarasenco for owner Valerie Shoun. The gelding has placed second in three of his six starts.
Kikntires Nlitnfires (Five Bar Cartel-Racin Thru Fire) made a game effort in third under jockey Larren Delorme for owner Web Ranch LLC. The filly has now raced in three states: Oklahoma, South Dakota and Iowa.
Timeto Be Fast (Hasta Be Fast-Flick Your Brakes) and Brian Beetem came in fourth for owner Skip Kahle.
