aking his 20th start against stakes company,
Cattail Cove rallied to win the $20,000 Azure Three Handicap at Los Alamitos on Oct. 22.
Cattail Cove was in last place at the start and going into the first stretch with jockey Ramon Sanchez aboard. They managed to surge at the end to win and his margin of victory was a neck over Mister Tornado. Trained by Juan Aleman, Cattail Cove covered the 400 yards in :19.954 and posted an 87 speed index. He earned the $11,000 winner’s share of the purse to bring his bankroll to $580,182 from 32 outs.
All told, Cattail Cove has won six races, and his two stakes wins include the $25,000 Independence Day Handicap-G3 at Los Alamitos on July 2.
This year he placed second in the Kaweah Bar Handicap-G3 and third in the Spencer L. Childers California Breeders Championship Handicap-G1 and in the Moonist Stakes. His resume also includes a second-place finish in the 2019 Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity-G1.
Owner Ralph Link Newcomb purchased the gelding for $62,000 at the 2018 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale. He was bred in California by Dr. Steve Burns out of the winning 2002 mare Katie Katella, a half-sister to Champions Hawkish, Hawkinson and Flame N Flash. She has produced 17 winners from 22 starters with earnings of $1,800,405.
Mister Tornado (Sports Cartel-Spanish Sola Mark) placed second under jockey Henry Lopez. He earned the $4,500 runner-up share of the purse for his owner Fernando Flores and trainer Felix Gonzalez.
A half-brother to Cattail Cove, Katella Avenue (Foose-Katie Katella) was third under rider Ruben Lozano. Valentin Zamudio prepped the 4-year-old gelding for owner Victory LLC.
Gentleman Chuck (Favorite Cartel-Nymph) and Up And Atem (Favorite Cartel-Up For It) completed the order of finish.
