championship titles: 1952 World Champion and 1952 Champion Stallion Johnny Dial; 1952, 1953 and 1954 Champion Gelding Brigand; 1953 Champion 2-Year-Old Colt Super Charge; and 1963 Champion Aged Stallion The Haymaker. His runners have earned $583,468.
Depth Charge was sired by the
1936 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Bold Venture, who was the 1936 Champion Three-Year-Old Colt. Bold Venture was sired by St Germans and out of Possible by Ultimus, the double grandson of Domino. The dam of Depth Charge was Quickly by Haste, and she was out of Stephanie by Stefan The Great. You will recall that Quickly is the half-sister to Stepwisely, the dam of Bolero.
Burbank explained how the first breeding to Sparkling Tip came about, “We strongly believed in the bloodlines that were combined in our Tip and wanted to breed her to the best. In our minds and hearts, Jet Deck was the best.”
BREEDING FOR SPEED
Jet Deck was the 1963 AQHA Racing World Champion, the Champion Stallion, the Champion Three-Year-Old and in 1962 he was the Champion Stallion and the Champion Two-Year-Old Colt. He was the first horse to win over $200,000. After his racing career, he went to stand with Bud Warren alongside the stallions Leo and Sugar Bars.
The problem was that they couldn’t afford Jet Deck’s stud fee. So, Burbank asked Bud Warren for credit on the breeding. He told Jank how much they
appreciated what Bud Warren did for them. “I asked one of the finest horsemen on record to give credit to a mare that nobody really knew. On those terms, Bud Warren opened Jet Deck’s gates to Tip. This is something that Linda and I will remember and cherish for all time.”
The mating of Jet Deck and Sparkling Tip gave the world a filly they named Elan Again. As the story goes, their oldest daughter was Leanne but the babysitter pronounced it Elan. So, the filly became Elan Again. A look in the dictionary will give us some interesting information about the word “elan.” The definition for elan is vigorous spirit or enthusiasm. Some of the synonyms include dash, flair, style, and zeal.
The race career of Elan Again began in Goliad, Texas, in the Texas Futurity
