the All American Futurity Sale by Fred Scane for $122,000. Scane
and the Burbanks were friends
and reportedly partnered on the racing career of Merridoc, who
hit the track running. He won his maiden in April of 1979 and then returned a month later to win his Bay Meadows Futurity trial and then won the finals. His time for the Bay Meadows Futurity was a New Stakes Record time of :17.76 for
350 yards. His next start was in his trial of the SKOAL Dash For Cash Futurity where he qualified for the consolation but was scratched to wait for the Golden State Futurity. He won his trial and the finals of the Golden State Futurity. The winning time in the Golden State Futurity of :19.73 for 400 yards was the fastest time ever clocked at Los Alamitos at that distance by a juvenile. That was his last start at two. He had seven starts with six wins and one second earning $215,252.
The three-year-old record for Merridoc shows that he won his trial for the El Primero Del Ano Derby and then finished fourth in the finals. He then won his trial for the Golden State Derby but again finished fifth in the finals. His
next start came at Ruidoso in the Rainbow Derby trials with a second. He didn’t qualify and he went unplaced in his next two starts and was retired to stud.
Merridoc sired runners that earned $13,486,849 from 1,198 starters with 809 ROM, 58 stakes winners and 64 stakes placed foals. Fred Scane bred Merridoc and got Solvency, Griswold and Apprehend - three of his top runners - and they show the versatility of the Merridoc runners.
Solvency out of Oughterdo Sumpin by Tiny Charger was a consistent runner with 12 starts, six wins, two seconds and three third earning $408,178 at the age of two. His stakes finishes
are as follows: second in the Bay Meadows Futurity-G1, first in the Kindergarten Futurity-G1, fifth in the Ed Burke Memorial Futurity-G2, third in the Cypresss Handicap
and third in the Golden State Futurity-G1. His 1985 record gave him the Champion Two-Year-Old Gelding title. He won the Golden State Derby-G1, was a finalist in the Los Alamitos Derby-G1, second in the Independence Day Handicap, eighth in the Laddie Handicap,
and seventh in the Champion of Champions-G1 at three. He made five starts in 1987 with his best finish a fifth in the Vessels Maturity-G1. He retired with 27 starts, eight wins, four seconds and four thirds earning $632,422.
Griswold, who was out of Twist A Fleet by Fleet Mel, started his career as a stakes placed finalist that included a second in the 1988 Golden State Futurity-G1.
