DANJER
by Jess Johnson
Undeterred by a sloppy track and pouring rain, 2020 AQHA Champion Aged Horse and Champion Aged Gelding Danjer, for the second
year in a row, proved much the best in the $52,360 Bank of America Championship Challenge-G3 at Canterbury Park on July 6.
Danjer broke first, driving away with a 35 mph tailwind from the four horse field for trainer Dean Frey and regular rider Cody Smith. The big brown gelding by FDD Dynasty and out of Shez Jess Toxic, owned by Dean Frey, Downtime Enterprises LLC and Billy G. Smith, dominated throughout the 440 yards, crossing the finish line 2 1/4-lengths ahead of Jason Olmstead’s Juice Is Loose.
Coming off a win in the Debbie Schauf Remington Park Invitational Championship-G1 on May 29, this is Danjer’s third start and second win in 2021. With over $1 million in earnings Danjer surely brings excitement wherever he goes.
Dean Frey bred Danjer out of Shez Jess Toxic, winner of the Evergreen Park Juvenile Challenge where she set a New Track Record. She has produced two winners from five starters. 7-time stakes winner Danjer is her first stakes winner.
Runner-up Juice is Loose (One Famous Eagle- Miss Southern DD) was ridden by Edwin Escobedo for owner Tom Maher and Stephen Williams. The colt was also second in the Will Rogers Downs Derby Challenge last year.
Finishing third, Heza Blues Man (Favorite Cartel-Eyesa Blues Girl) broke second but faded crossing the muddy track. Trained by Edward Ross Hardy for owner Chelsey Badura, the gelding was ridden by L. Salvador Martinez. He also finished third in last year’s Prairie Meadows Challenge Championship-G2.
Kowboy Jim (FDD Dynasty-Counting On You) finished fourth. Jess Make A Mark was scratched.

Lynnder 16, who is by Apollitical Jess and out of Tinys Corona Queen, covered 400 yards over the sloppy track in :19.702 for a 103 speed index, the fastest ever in the six running’s of this race.
The sorrel mare, trained by Jason Olmstead
and ridden by the young star Edwin G. Escobedo, took home $18,921 for her efforts, and now boasts impressive lifetime earnings of $718,889 for owners Richard Tobin and Tom Maher.
James and Marilyn Helzer bred Lynnder 16
out of winner Tinys Corona Queen. The mare has produced 14 winners from 16 starters, including stakes winners Rattle N Battle, Apollitical Man, Hardtoget, First Of 15 and Reacher 16. Lynnder
is the sixth stakes winner and top money earner. Trainer Jason Olmstead’s Apollitical Mogul (Apollitical Jess-Cash Cartel) finished in second place for owner Tom Maher with Luis Valenzuela in the irons. The 5-year-old mare won the 2019 Prairie Meadows Derby Challenge and was second in the 2019 Canterbury Park Derby and North Central QHRA Futurity.
Finishing third was the Clint Crawford trained Lovepop (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Xoom) with Berkley Packer aboard for owner Paul Treadwell. The filly has won three races from 15 starts.
Dark Moon (First Moonflash-Special Dark Ivory), El Oh El (Apollitical Jess-Cute Ivory Girl), DG Dreamer (One Dashing Eagle-Iza Sugar N Spice) and Features Finest Kind (Tres Seis-Feature For You) completed the order of finish.
North Star State Derby
JESS ROCKET MAN
by Michael Compton
Jess Rocket Man justified his odds-on favoritism in the inaugural running of the $28,000 North Star State Derby at Canterbury Park on July 14, win- ning the 400-yard dash as he pleased in a dominat- ing performance.
Ridden by Edwin Escobedo, the 3-year-old gelded son of Apollitical Jess jumped out to an early lead in the North Star State Derby and was never seriously threatened by his five rivals. He stretched his lead to 1-length in the lane and crossed the wire a clear-cut winner by 1 1/4-lengths over stablemate Change N Gears, who finished second under Luis Valenzuela. Jess Rocket Man covered the distance in :19.779 over a muddy (sealed) track, just ticks off of Send Me This Wagon’s 2014 track record of :19.583. Jess Rocket Man’s final clocking earned a speed index of 101.
Owned and bred by Lunderborg LLC and trainer by Jason Olmstead, Jess Rocket Man improved his record to 10-4-1-0 and the $14,000 winner’s share of the purse increased his bankroll to $46,366. Bred in Minnesota out of the PYC Paint Your Wagon mare Paint Or More, Jess Rocket Man is a full brother to stakes winners Dickey Bob and PYC Jess Bit Mydust, who were also bred by Judy and Bruce Lunderborg.
Olmstead also sent out the runner-up Change
N Gears (Hes Relentless-Engine Number Nine).
A Minnesota homebred for Summer Run Inc., the brown gelding broke outward at the start and rallied strongly in the lane to secure the place spot as the second wagering choice in the race. Living in the Past (Little PYC-Jazzing Jackie) bobbled early and finished third under jockey David Pinon for owner Ken Quade and trainer Brayan Velazquez.
Furiousity (Furyofthewind-Six It Up), Western Reserve (Im a Fancy PYC-Western Fun), and Corona White Socks (Corona Caliente-Holy White Socks TB) completed the order of finish.
