AQHA CBY Distance Chal.
MS ESTHER
by Jess Johnson
Ms Esther added a second win to her 2021 season in the rainy AQHA Canterbury Park Distance Challenge on July 6.
Breaking last in the four horse field, Ms Esther found her space along the rail and blew by the early leader, SW Artemisia, to win by 5 1/2-lengths over a muddy track.
The sorrel mare, bred by Duwyne and Janice Pfeifle, covered 870 yards in :45.375 earning a 103 speed index and adding $14,242 to her account. This was nearly an identical time to her last out at Remington Park for a third-place finish in the May 29 Remington Park Distance Championship.
Ms Esther has hit the board in all of her five starts around the hook this year with Andrew Samaniego riding. She is trained by Victor Hanson.
The Pfeifle’s bred Ms Esther out of winner
Tres Down The Cash, who finished third in the Harrah’s Entertainment Derby-G2. The mare has produced two winners from five starters. Ms Esther, her first stakes winner, also won the 2019 & 2020 Will rogers Downs Distance Challenge-G3 as well as the 2019 Remingtn Park Distance Challenge-G3 and Pauls Valley Stakes-G2.
SW Artemisia (Second Painted Sign-Snowbound Lady Bug) set the pace and finished 2nd for owner Milena Kwiecien & trainer Jason Pascoe with Nik Goodwin aboard. The filly was 2nd in the 2020 Will Rogers Downs Distance Challenge-G3.
Multiple stakes finalist Cold Brewster (Im A Fancy PYC-Crescent Shore) was 3rd in his first stakes competition in 2021 for owner Austin Watterson, jockey L. Salvador Martinez & trainer Durk Peery.
