QROOI Sprint Series #2
JESS A SWEET SUPRIZE
by Michael Compton
It should come as little surprise that Jess A Sweet Suprize took down top prize in the $15,685 QROOI Sprint Series #2 Stakes at Ajax Downs on
July 21. It was the second straight victory in the “Sprint Series” for the 5-year-old bay mare, who cap- tured the QROOI Sprint Series #1 in her previous start on June 16.
Under regular rider Cory Spataro, Jess A Sweet Suprize set out to the front at the start of the 220- yard dash, the second in the series. She maintained a clear advantage through the lane and won wire-to- wire by 3/4-length at the finish over Carneros, stop- ping the timer in :11.747, lowering the previous track record of :11.780 set by the runner-up (Carneros) in 2019. The final clocking earned a 108 speed index.
Owned and trained by Craig Spada, Jess A Sweet Suprize improved her career mark to 23-6-4-5 with the victory and the winner’s share of the purse increased her bankroll to $52,878. Bred in Iowa
by Pattie Marshall and Erin Goings, Jess A Sweet Suprize is produced from the multiple stakes-win- ning Spit Curl Jess mare Jess Curl My Prize.
Stakes winner Carneros (Prospect To The Top- Cakebread And Thou) finished a game second under Ismael Mosqueira. The previous track-record holder is owned by Milena Kwiecien and is conditioned by Jason Pascoe.
Night Fishn (Sugarman Perry-Fisher Lines) and jockey Ramiro Castillo finished third for owner Mary Schrama and trainer Dan Giles.
Silken Siri (Desirio-Silken Memories), Arctic Fame (Dash To The Arctic-Magic Ta Fame), Chicksdigmymoneybags (Chicks Regard-Aaneta), Shes Sizzling (Sizzlin Cartel-Shenandoah Special), and Zoxtobeyou (Pappasoto-A Leading Memory) followed, while heavy favorite and former Horse of the Year Country Boy 123 (Country Chicks-Very Dashin 123) lunged at the start and finished last.
Alberta Stallion S. Futurity
O FIRST SWEET HEART
by Tracy Gantz
Experience pays off, as O First Sweet Heart dem- onstrated in the $45,826 Alberta Stallion Stakes Futurity at Century Mile on July 2. The only horse
with more experience than just their trial heat, O First Sweet Heart dominated.
O First Sweet Heart was still a maiden going into the Futurity final, but she had raced three times at Remington Park, her best effort a fifth. Third in her trial behind fastest-qualifier Bearcat Bill, O First Sweet Heart went off at 16-1.
Ridden by Larris Allen, O First Sweet Heart broke third in the final, but quickly took com- mand. She scored by 1 1/2-lengths in :15.619 for 300 yards.
Wesley Oulton trains O First Sweet Heart for owner Jeffrey R. W. Rath, and Oulton bred the filly in Alberta, Canada, from winner Eyesa Perry. The mare has produced four winners in five starters, including 2020 Canada Cup Futurity-G3 winner Eyesa Timber, a full brother to O First Sweet Heart.
William Leach trains Obsessed Bug (Obsessed With Corona-Paulina Bug) and Destello De Luna (Lethal N First-A Mere Toast), who finished second and third. Corrine Andros rode Obsessed Bug for owner Jacqueline Reay, and Ricardo Moreno rode Destello De Luna for owners Jane Leech and Haley Moreno. Obsessed Bug won her trial in her racing debut. Second-fastest qualifier Destello De Luna finished second in his trial, also his racing debut, to Bearcat Bill.
Completing the field were Bearcat Bill (First Timber-Splashy Mamacita), First Golden Rose (First Timber-Madam Goldilocks), Obsessive Gambler (Obsessed With Corona-Snake Eyed Gal), Archie Royal First (First Timber-Gilded Gold), Not Good Enough (First Timber-Lets Get Going), and A Verygood Moonshine (Six Packa Moonshine- Tammy Timber). First Authority was scratched.
Alberta Stallion Stakes Derby
JAGNESTIMBER
by Tracy Gantz
Bettors who backed Jagnestimber in the $26,081 Alberta Stallion Stakes Derby at Century Mile on July 2 found a lot to celebrate during the Fourth of
July weekend. As the third-longest shot of the field, Jagnestimber paid $141.40 for a $2 win ticket.
Jockey Adrian Gonzalez broke Jagnestimber on top in the 330-yard derby, but several others also got away well and Jagnestimber was fifth early. She put in a late drive to score by a neck in :17.326.
Jagnestimber hadn’t won since her racing debut
a year previously. She finished unplaced in five races in between victories. Joe Halerewich owns and trains Jagnestimber, who was bred in Alberta, Canada, by the partnership of Halerwich/McCurdy/Campkin.
Winner Gilded Gold is the dam of Jagnestimber. The mare has produced two winners in four starters, including Timbergold, who won last year’s Alberta Stallion Stakes Derby, ran second in the 2019 Alberta Stallion Stakes Futurity, and finished third in the 2019 Jerry Stojan Memorial Stakes. The family goes back to the stakes-winning Spencer Childers-bred mare Black Sable, Jagnestimber’s fourth dam.
Eyesa Timber (First Timber-Eyesa Perry), bred, owned, and trained by Wesley Oulton, finished second with J.B. Botello aboard. Eyesa Timber won the 2020 Canada Cup Futurity-G3 and Alberta Bred Futurity.
Glenn Wills’ homebred Bigtime Knockout (Teller Im Bigtime-Royal Knockout) ran third. Martin Ortiz rode the gelding for trainer Buckey Stockwell. Bigtime Knockout ran third in the 2020 Alberta Bred Futurity.
Completing the field were Timbers Express (First Timber-Daddys Express Girl), Ulnvme To (First Timber-Ulnvme), Northforkhigh (Streakinisanattitude- Highnest-TB), Bound Too Be First (First Timber- Snowbound Star), Jess Be First (First Timber-Ima Jess A Streaker), Shamoura (Cuivre River-Zillas Amour), and Royale Runaway (First Timber-Sparkling Hy).
