Los Alamitos Super Derby-G1

James Streelman and Bill Dale have taken a homebred and a yearling purchase and cleaned up this year at Los Alamitos and Ruidoso Downs. The yearling buy, $30,000 Jess Savin Candy, came close to winning the All American Triple Crown at Ruidoso, and out west at Los Alamitos, home- bred Flash Bak captured the Nov. 7 Los Alamitos Super Derby-G1.
Flash Bak, sent away as the 11-10 favorite, almost didn’t get there after a slow start. “There was a lot of shouting and screaming in the starting gates,” said Oscar Peinado, who rode Flash Bak. “He moved a little bit and didn’t break.”
Seventh in the first couple of strides, Flash Bak passed some rivals in the lane, but it didn’t look like he’d be able to catch Apollitical Patty. Then, Flash Bak put on a brilliant burst of speed in the final few yards to score by a neck in :19.600 for 400 yards.
