had us by a length. It wasn’t until the finish line that we caught her. At the end, he always takes off. He has so much ability at the end.”
Jaime Gomez trains Flash Bak for Streelman and Dale, who race as Dutch Masters III. Gomez has said that Flash Bak has a calm disposition and that the gelding is quite smart. Those traits have contributed to Flash Bak’s success, as he approaches $1 million in earnings. Flash Bak has also won the 2021 Los Alamitos Winter Derby-G1, run second in the 2020 Los Alamitos $2 Million Futurity-G1, and finished third in the 2021 All American Invitational Stakes.
After qualifying the fastest for the Super Derby in the Oct. 16 trials, Flash Bak was put on the vet’s list. He had to work 220 yards faster than :13 to satisfy the requirements of getting off the list, which he did with a time of :12.40 on Oct. 31.
“There was a little angst last Sunday,” said Streelman. “I was a little concerned. I knew he could do :13 flat with no problem, but we had some problems with him at Ruidoso as well.”
Flash Bak could earn an invitation to the Champion of Champions-G1, a race that Streelman said he has only been able to have a horse in twice in 35 years.
“My horses run good at ages two and three and then kind of top out,” he said. “But this
horse has been lightly raced his whole career.” Meanwhile, Streelman and Dale are giving
Jess Savin Candy a rest at Dale’s Missouri farm. “They took a chip out of each ankle,” said
Streelman. “The doctors say he’ll be better and stronger next year than he was this year.”
Streelman had supplemented Flash Bak to the Los Alamitos Super Derby with good results, so he said they would supplement Jess Savin Candy to next year’s edition.
Jim Streelman and Bill Dale bred Flash Bak in Missouri from Checknbac, a mare Gomez also trained for Dutch Masters. Checknbac
won the 2006 Governor’s Cup Futurity-RG1 and 2007 La Pacifica Handicap. She is out of Runnin Bac, who captured the 2002 Mildred N. Vessels Memorial Handicap-G1 and three other stakes. Checknbac has produced five winners in nine starters, including Cobalt Creek, winner of the 2017 Refrigerator Handicap-G1 and 2018 Evangeline Downs 550 Stakes, and stakes- placed Distant Fury and Eagle Cry.
Monty Arrossa trains 2nd-placed Apollitical Patty (Apollitical Blood-A Perfect Cocktail) and 3rd-placed Fallout (Favorite Cartel-Fall For It). Jose Nicasio rode Apollitical Patty
for owner Juliana Hawn Holt. A millionaire, Apollitical Patty won last year’s Los Alamitos $2 Million Futurity and the 2021 Los Alamitos Oaks-G3. Jesus Ayala rode Fallout for owner
Dunn Ranch. Fallout also ran third in the 2021 Heritage Place Derby-G2.
Followed by A Dangerous Flash (First Moonflash-Flame N Flash), Counting The Ways (Favorite Cartel-Million Ways), Reason To Fly MV (Good Reason SA-Take A Look), SC Divas Cartel Man (Corona Cartel-Spit Curl Diva), Rite On Time (Favorite Cartel-A Regal Classic) & A Dash of Sign (Tempting Dash-A Tres Of Paint).
