NM Classic Sophomore Stakes

n the last year, Icy Morning Breeze won four in a
row then ran back a couple of times. Now she is
back to her winning ways in the New Mexico Classic Sophomore Stakes, a 400-yard event that carried a total purse worth $30,000 hosted by Zia Park on Nov. 1.
Icy Morning Breeze eased away from the four post carrying Juan Rivas. They gave the field a head start, but by mid-stretch had a head lead. Then the running really started, and the filly demolished the field to win by 1 1/4-lengths in :19.673 to earn a 94 speed index.
The daughter of Winners Version also earned the first place check worth $18,000, taking her lifetime earnings to $258,995. Her race record stands at six wins in 11 starts. Her team includes breeders/owners Mary Robertson and William R Robertson. Jackie Riddle is in charge of conditioning. Icy Morning Breeze won the 2021 Mountain Top New Mexico Bred Derby and the 2020 New Mexico Classic Futurity-G2
Icy Morning Breeze was bred in New Mexico, out of the winning mare Icy Storm TB, who has produced two foals. Icy Morning Breeze is her best product.
Winner Takes It All (Winners Version-A Scootin Princess), under jockey Sergio Becerra Jr., took second for owner David Vasquez and trainer Eric Valenzuela.
In a rare 3-way dead heat for third. it was: Tuco Salamanca (TF Featured Effort-The Rainbow Rea), who got the 1st call away from the gate under Luis Guerrero for owner Jennifer Lopez & trainer Anthony Montoya; Ember Moon (First Moonflash-Episode Of Fire), who ran a gritty race under jockey Adrion Ramos for owners Jimmy Vasquez, Scott Branson, and Lionel Carrasco Onsurez, and trainer Eric Valenzuela; and Fantastico Dragon (Zulu Dragon-Jess Lookin), who broke to the inside but straightened under jockey Sergio Dominguez for trainer Jesus Cuanda and owner Mexas Racing Team.
Mr Money Baggs (Sixes Royal-Money Smart Gal) followed in fourth place. Im Jess Sixy and Nazboo were both scratched.

arroll A. Durbin’s Why Buy The Cow earned
his first graded stakes victory in the $50,000 King Rick Rack Stakes-G3 at Zia Park on Dec. 5.
Ridden by Tracy Hebert for trainer Kenneth Durbin and sent to post at odds of 9-1, Why Buy The Cow covered 870 yards in :45.878, and his winning margin was 3/4-length from reigning Champion Distance Horse and 4-5 favorite Madewell.
Why Buy The Cow, a 6-year-old gelded son of the Heza Fast Man stallion Heza Motor Scooter posted a 94 speed index while banking the $30,000 winner’s share of the purse.
Why Buy The Cow was bred in New Mexico by Mike Weatherly. The bay gelding is out of Southwest Treasure, a winning daughter of the Dash For Cash stallion Celadon.
Why Buy The Cow was facing open company off of a second-place finish in the $100,000 New Mexico Cup 870 Championship-RG3 for state-breds at Zia Park
on Oct. 31. Raced in two states, including Oklahoma, he has won six of 29 outs -- including the 2019 New Mexico Cup 870 Championship -- and he has earned $283,514, of which $249,764 has been banked from 20 starts at the 870-yard trip.
Madewell (Jess Jones-Streakin Peacock) earned $10,000 to bring his bankroll to $343,472 from 38 races for his owners Ray and Davy Madewell. Maria Baca rode the homebred 7-year-old gelding for trainer Bernard Baca.
My Onetime Corona (Kiss My Hocks-One Corona At A Time) ran third and pocketed $5,000 for his owner, Abel Chavez. Paul Nieto rode the 4-year-old gelding for trainer Omar Vargas.
Breaking New Ground (One Dashing Eagle- Heavenly Trip), My Bucket Is Full (Prospect To The Top-Kellies Feature), and Dan The Flashman (First Moonflash-Domeinitchy) completed the order of finish. El Tarasco 727 was scratched.

hen the dust settled after a hotly contested
400-yard $100,000 Louisiana Champions Day Classic-RG2 at Fair Grounds on Dec. 11, a pair of Louisiana-bred multiple stakes winners couldn’t be separated at the wire, resulting in a dead heat.
Lifeinthefastlanes & rider David Alvarez darted to the front at the start, establishing a 1/2-length advantage early. Eyeondaprize & Noe Castaneda gave chase while racing in tight quarters and rallied on the inside to finish on terms with the early leader. They crossed the wire together in a brisk :21.454 for a 105 speed index, just missing the 2016 track record of :21.131 set by Heza Bell Perry.
11-time winner Lifeinthefastlanes (Jess Louisiana Blue-Pantherinthefastlane) made it back-to-back stakes scores after capturing the Opelousas Stakes on Nov. 13. The $32,500 winner’s share raised her earnings to $514,381 for owner Paragon Farms & trainer Kenneth Roberts.
Kay & Wade Loup Jr. bred Lifeinthefastlanes out of Pantherinthefastlane. Eyeondaprize (Fast Prize Jordan- Good Game Meg) also entered the main event following a stakes win in the French Quarter Stakes on Oct. 30. The 4-year-old filly is now a winner in 8 of 19 starts and her earnings stand at $142,660 for owner Rosendo Valdez & trainer Rosendo Valdez Jr. Eyeondaprize was bred by Daniel Trahan out of the mare Good Game Meg.
Tuckers Prize (Fast Prize Dash-BB Secrets Game) and jockey Ubaldo Luna were 3rd for owner/trainer Preston Jourdan. Followed by Maggies Runaway (Sir Runaway Dash-Ms Maggies First), Lightemupwithcharm (Sizzlin Cartel- Grace Filled Charm), Heza Bell Perry Jr. (Heza Fast Dash-De Bell Perry), JRS Coronas Toast (Coronas Leaving You-Egos Toast to Dash), and Hezjessmagic (Sir Runaway Dash-Shez Jess Magic). Appolitical B Snow was scratched at the gate.
