Alfonso Patiño Martínez-Aceves Classic
LA VICTORIA JESS
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Speedhorse
Six three-year-old and older runners participated in the ninth edition of this classic in honor of Don Alfonso Patiño Martínez- Aceves. This race was for horses who participated in claiming races for $80,000 pesos ($3,861 U.S. approx.) between Jan. 1 and Oct. 31 and paid a registration of $20,000 pesos ($965 U.S. approx.), which was the main contribution to the $195,500 pesos ($9,434 U.S. approx.) purse.
SE Millenium Alert, Canyon Horse and Freeze In The Breeze were preferred at the betting windows to win this race; and, the first two came close to achieving this by finishing in second and third place.
Living up to her name, La Victoria Jess beat the field, starting from the 4-post under Gabriel Antonio Vega, who replaced Paul Osvaldo Rodríguez, also scoring the first classic of her career.
At the start, Mago Corona stumbled, while SE Millenium Alert was at the head of the
group, very close to the inside rail, responding to the demands of Alejandro Gómez Díaz. Meanwhile, La Victoria Jess
took the center of the track
under a quiet ride by jockey Gabriel Antonio Vega, and managed to take the lead in the final yards. They crossed the wire a neck in front to finish the 300 yards.
The filly completed the trip in :15.40 for an 82 speed index, thus earning her second victory and first in a stakes event from eight starts, two of which resulted in third place finishes.
La Victoria Jess is a four-
year-old sorrel filly bred in Mexico by Carlos Roel, and is a product of the cross of the stallion He
Be Jess Special, by Feature Mr Jess, and the mare Nothin Like Lynn (by Likenothinyoueversaw).
She debuted on March 24, 2019, but broke her maiden the following Aug. 4 at a distance of 220
yards. She also placed third in the Héctor Roldán Arreola Classic on Sept. 12, a stakes that is part of the Mexican Quarter Horse Breeders’ Cup, the results of which were reported in our November issue.
The filly is the property of Rancho La Soledad de Álvarez, which also has among its outstanding runners this season Corona Lips (AMCCCCM Classic, Felix Bañuelos Jimenez
Classic, and Jose Merced Gomez Orozco Classic), Makit Snappi (Revelation Classic)
and Cheetah Poppy (Alberto Gomez Gutierrez Classic). Adán López Alejandre is the trainer responsible for the preparation of these runners.
The special guest at the awards was Enrique Martínez-Aceves, representing the honoree, who presented the corresponding trophies to Orlando Álvarez Martínez, owner of Rancho La Soledad de Álvarez.
SE Millenium Alert (Millenium Cartel- Travel Alert, by Separatist) finished in second place guided by Alejandro Gómez Díaz for owner Cuadra Santa Elena and trainer Joaquín Ramón Peláez Cortés.
Canyon Horse (Sea Horse Corona- Sonoma Canyon, by Holland Ease) finished in third under the guidance of Miguel Ángel Rodríguez. The gelding is also owned by the Cuadra Santa Elena and trained by Joaquín Ramón Peláez Cortés.
Mago Corona (Corona On The Rocks- Eta), Principe Texas (Texas Kool-Princesita Crown) and Freeze In The Breeze (Feature This Cold-This Chicks Breezin) completed the order of finish.
