Card One Starter and Juan Pulido in post parade for Oklahoma Derby.
“I just tried to keep him out of trouble,” said Pulido. “I asked him, and he gave me everything I asked for. He’s done everything good for me.”
A homebred for Jose Guzman of
Donna, Texas, Card One Starter improved his record to 10-6(1)-2(1)-2(1) and the $100,640 winner’s share of the purse increased his bankroll to $188,865.
Despite his impressive record and having never finished off the board in 10 out-
ings, it was the initial stakes win for the Oklahoma-bred who finished a close second in the Old South Futurity at Delta Downs last season and was third in the TQHA Sires Futurity.
“He always runs a good race,” said Guzman who shared that his charge will likely point to the Sam Houston Derby-G3 for his next stakes target. “He is right there in all of his races from the beginning of his career. He has a lot of seconds and thirds; I didn’t know if he could win even though he had one of the fastest qualifying times in the race. It was a big effort.”
Card One Starter is out of the winning Tempting Dash mare Stable Dancer. A win- ner herself over the Remington Park surface, Stable Dancer won 2 races during her racing career and placed in 4 others en route to earn- ings of $24,425.
Runner-up Apollitical Redflash (Apollitical Jess-Chalala) gave the winner
all he could handle under jockey Francisco Calderon. The sorrel 3-year-old gelding, owned by Cavenaugh Quarter Horses LLC, finished second to Card One Starter in the trial heat as well and dueled with him all the way to the wire once more. Clinton Crawford trains the 2-time winner, who was bred in California by Rancho El Cabresto Inc.
Squid Word (Favorite Cartel-Tahma Hawk), with Cristian Aguirre-Erives riding for trainer Juliana Mancillas, fired a big shot at odds of 28-1 and finished third, just a neck behind Apollitical Redflash. Owned by Cesar Nunez, Squid Word captured his trial heat and is a 2-time winner. Steve Burns bred the brown gelding in California.
Followed by Saturday Nite Secret (Hez Our Secret-It’s Saturday Nite TB),
Leading Cartel (Big Daddy Cartel-
Leading Diva), Party Fare (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Party Girl Affair), Facing the Fire (Valiant Hero-DM Sashay N Fire),
Willie McBride (Apollitical Blood- Shanachee), Luminositi (Apollitical Jess- Quick Moon Sign) and Relentlessly (Hes Relentless-Runaway Renata). Relentlessly was disqualified for causing interference after ducking in early and moved from fifth and placed last.
