“I liked her because of her family, and she had great conformation,” said Trey Wood, who trains Revenant Moon for owners Scott Bryant, Norman Allen, and Trey Odom. “Down the road we wanted her as a broodmare.”
Revenant Moon’s broodmare days may have to wait a while if she continues her racing career as she has begun. Wood unveiled her for the Futurity trials March 8. She scored by 2-lengths to qualify the fastest.
Jose Alvarez (no relation to the breed-
ers) rode her in both her trial and the final. Despite being near fractious horses in the gate and having to be reloaded, Revenant Moon broke like a shot to lead throughout the 300 yards and win by a neck in :15.397 as the 7-10 favorite.
“The trials were so impressive,” said Norma, who watched the races on television. “She did not make a mistake—not one. It looked like she knew what she was doing. It was the same exact race in the finals. I thought she was very professional. It was a good job on the training.”
The jockey noted that Revenant Moon became a little nervous in the gate “because the other horses were going crazy. But once we reloaded, she was very professional—she sure can run.”
Bryant and the Alvarezes all have experience with Revenant Moon’s family. Bryant raced Champion Flash And Roll, a daughter of First Moonflash. The Alvarezes bred Champion First Moonflash, who is a half-brother to Sochi Moon, the dam of Revenant Moon.
The Alvarezes have had the family a long time. They purchased Pukka Up, Revenant Moon’s fourth dam, with Tilted Moon, who became the third dam, at that mare’s side. Tilted Moon pro- duced Nagano Moon, Revenant Moon’s second dam and the dam of First Moonflash.
Nagano Moon was unable to win in six starts, though she placed three times, includ- ing finishing third in the 2000 New Mexican Spring Fling Stakes.
“We put her in training, but she had a prob- lem with a back foot,” said Norma. “She’d have one good day, one bad day.”
Eventually, Nagano Moon was diagnosed with a broken navicular and was retired. She produced a host of good runners, including graded stakes winner Dash Ta Moon. Sochi Moon also had some bad racing luck, winning only once. Revenant Moon is her first foal. Sochi Moon has a yearling daughter of Corona Surfer and a suckling daughter of Jet Black Patriot. Norma said that they are breeding her to Kiss My Hocks this year.
Francisco Calderon piloted Hock It To You (Kiss My Hocks-Lil Famous Dash) to second for owners Reynold Munoz and Heavy Hitters Racing Stables and trainer Ruben Soto. Hock It To You won his trial in his racing debut, qualifying the second fastest.
Shy Kisser (Kiss My Hocks-Shyann La Jolla) ran third under Gonzalo Gutierrez for owner Jesus Omar Martinez and trainer Oscar Nunez. The filly finished second to Revenant Moon in her trial, also her racing debut.
Completing the field were Foose Lodge (Foose-Classic Sassy Chic), Revenant Dynasty (A Revenant-Kirklyns Dynasty), Jr What You Mean (One Fabulous Eagle-Dolls In Fire), Apolitical Jeanius (Apollitical Jess-All N The Jeans) and Apollicartel (Big Daddy Cartel- Apollititaka). De Laurentis and Pevs Charley were scratched.
