Bank of America Mexico Championship Challenge
NASHVILLE CARTEL
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Speedhorse
Only five horses participated in this race reserved for horses three years and older nominated for The Challenge program of the
American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA), which had an attractive purse of $868,240 pesos ($43,092 U.S. approx.) and was disputed over 440 yards on a fast track.
The only stakes winner in the field was Executive Temptation, who won the 2021 AQHA Mexico Derby Challenge, which only had three participants, including Nashville Cartel – the winner of this race.
It was an “unpleasant” reunion on the track between Executive Temptation and Nashville Cartel, despite being from the same stable. Shortly after the break, they had a couple
of contacts, with Nashville Cartel’s rider Alejandro Gómez being left without his right stirrup, which he could not recover, riding the remainder of the race with a single stirrup.
In the race, JM Volcom Regard stumbled, which decided his result at the finish where he closed in last place. The rest of the small group headed towards the wire, with Nashville Cartel crossing 1/2-length in front.
Nashville Cartel fin-
ished the course in :22.04,
equivalent to an 83 speed
index, which he also obtained
after having won his Maiden
race on June 26, taking his
record to 2-4-0 from 14 starts
and adding 451,485 pesos
($22,408 U.S. approx.) to his
bank account. He is a son
of leading stallion Corona
Cartel and out of the mare Shazoomin Rose
by Shazoom. Nashville Cartel began his racing career in April 2020 at racetracks in the United States, where he had four starts. Upon arriving in Mexico, he debuted on May 23, 2021, where he has remained active to this day under the ownership of the Cuadra Jojola R where he is trained by Joaquín Ramón Peláez Cortés.
In second place was Notorious Gray (Separatist-Favored Tell, Teller Cartel), who also finished second in the 2021 AQHA John Deere Mexico Juvenile Challenge. She was ridden by Mario Alberto López Marmolejo for owner Cuadra Jojola R and trainer Joaquín Ramón
Peláez Cortés.
Dadds Special Effort
(Special Effort-Five Bar Molly, Dash Ta Fame), a deb- utant filly at the Hipodromo de las Americas, took third place led by Alejandro Almazán for the Cuadra Centenario and trainer Ángel Ovidio Cárdenas Penagos.
Executive Temptation (Tempting Dash-Executive Looks) and JM
Volcom Regard (Volcom-Snow Regard) com- pleted the order of finish.
Leaning on one stirrup, Alejandro Gómez led Nashville Cartel (#1A) to victory.
