victory in his trial. For the final, Smith returned on Nothin Like You, while Ramiro Garcia, the only other jockey to ride Nothin Like You, piloted Hammes’ other qualifier, Iza Good Guy. Both horses come from the same family, sharing the same third dam of Dolls Prodigy.
When the gate opened in the final, the horses on either side of Nothin Like You veered away, leaving him plenty of room. He and Smith capitalized on that to take aim on leader Sassalitical, the favorite and the fastest qualifier. Nothin Like You came on strong late to nab Sassalitical by a head in :17.512 for 350 yards.
The late Marvin Willhite, Hammes’ father-in-law, began the development of Nothin Like You’s family, joined later by the late Tom Bradbury. Both Willhite and Bradbury are members of the American Quarter Horse Association Hall of Fame.
Willhite and his wife, Pat, bred Easy Jet Doll, the sixth dam of Nothin Like You and
a foal of 1973. Easy Jet Doll won the 1975 Gateway Downs Futurity and produced three- time stakes winner Native Jet Doll.
“Marvin sold Native Jet Doll to Tom Bradbury,” Hammes recalled. “Then Bradbury bred to Six Fols.”
Nothin Like You (#7) wins the $222,440 event by a head.
That cross produced Ive Been Lied To, the fourth dam of Nothin Like You.
“Marvin bought the yearling back, and that’s kind of the start of everything,” said Hammes.
Ive Been Lied To was the first of the family that Hammes trained. She won the 1990 Tots Randle Memorial Futurity-G3.
But the real powerhouse of the family arrived in the next generation: Dolls Prodigy, Nothing Like You’s third dam. A three-time graded stakes winner, Dolls Prodigy set a
New World Record of :17.148 for 350 yards at Arapahoe Park on May 31, 1999.
Hammes, Willhite, and Bradbury col- laborated on the next generation as well. Whos Kissin Who, the second dam, placed in two stakes. Bradbury and Lisa Beauprez then bred Whos Kissin Who to Carters Cartel to get Whos Kissin Carter. Hammes trained that filly for Bradbury and Beauprez to win the 2014 Rocky Mountain Futurity. Whos Kissin Carter, now a nine-year-old broodmare, has produced one other winner in four starters.
Willhite and Bradbury both died in 2019. But Hammes has continued training the family for Bradbury Racing. In addition to Nothin Like You and Iza Good Guy, Hammes also
trains Purty Darn Quick, who finished second in the Altoona Derby the same day as the Valley Junction Futurity. Purty Darn Quick’s third dam is Dolls Prodigy.
Sassalitical (Apollitical Jess-Jess Sass Me) finished second for jockey Daniel Amaya, trainer Clinton Crawford, and owners Tyler Graham and Adame Racing LLC. In five previous starts, the filly won three races and ran second once.
Erik Esqueda piloted Pevs Jukebox (FDD Dynasty-Ima Lazie Too) to third. Kenny Laymon trains the gelding for his wife, Regina. Pevs Jukebox, who has won twice, ran second in the Easy Jet Stakes-G3 and third in the Cherokee Nation Stakes.
Iza Good Guy (Jess Good Candy-Iza Doll Face) and CMC Rock Solid Chick (Rock Solid Jess-Country Mans Chick) dead- heated for fourth. Pycfastandfamous (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Illegally Famous) ran sixth. NSM Favorite Ice (Favorite Cartel- Corona With Ice) and Letyourliteshineonus (PYC Paint Your Wagon-My Girl Jessie) dead-heated for seventh, followed by Curls Ivory Princess (Ivory James-Eye A Spit Curl Girl) and Five Bar Barbie (Five Bar Cartel- Little Kool Barbie).
