Gillespie County Fair Futurity
DOITEZE
by Michael Compton
Despite breaking in sharply at the start, Doiteze gathered himself quickly, closed ground resolutely through the lane, and ran
away with the top prize in the $233,600 Gillespie County Fair Futurity at Gillespie County Fairgrounds on Aug. 29.
With jockey Jose Herbert aboard for owner Luis Plascencia and trainer Juan Diaz Jr., Doiteze raced toward the back of the pack early in a field of nine.
He broke in at the start from the number two-gate and he recieved the seventh call at the start.
The gelding moved just a bit forward in the pack by the first call, and he was in sixth position at that point.
With a strong rally, however, the 11-1 long shot collared the leaders in the lane and drew off in the late stages of the 350-yard test to win going away by 1-length from fellow long shot Eye This Carter to spring a mild upset.
Cartel In The Bayou, who was undefeated in his first two career starts and was the fastest qualifier from the Aug. 14 trials after giving a wire-to-wire performance, finished last as the 2-1 race favorite. He flashed speed early in the race, but struggled and faltered late under Manuel Gutierrez.
In winning the first stakes event of his career in his stakes debut, Doiteze covered the 350-yard distance in :17.552, earning a 99 speed index.
The $81,760 winner’s share of the purse increased Doiteze’s bankroll to $100,510 and the bay gelding is now a winner in two of five lifetime starts.
Doiteze made his first start on March
13 at Louisiana Downs in the trials to the Harrah’s Futurity, finishing fourth and miss- ing the finals.
Next, he moved to Sam Houston Race Park where he finished back in his trial to the Sam Houston Futurity, again not quali- fying to the finals.
He broke his maiden on May 27 at Sam Houston Race Park in his third attempt. It was a 250-yard event and Doiteze broke well in second from the nine-post and then drove to the finish line for a 1/2-length margin of victory for his first win.
Just prior to the Gillespie County Fair Futurity finals, Doiteze finished sec-
ond behind Rare B (third in the main event) in his Aug. 14 trial heat. Doiteze
made it into the futurity finals with the seventh fastest clocking.
Bred in Texas by Michele or Craig Snider, Doiteze was purchased by Plascencia for $9,500 at the 2020 TQHA Yearling Sale.
Doiteze is produced from the Jess Louisiana Blue mare Shakem Jess, a home- bred for the Sniders.
Shakem Jess made four starts in her race career, finishing third in her first start. Shakem Jess has produced 100% winners from her two starters, with one stakes winner in Doiteze.
His second dam, Shake Em Wild, is a winning daughter of Time Runs Wild, pro- ducing 100% earners from her two starters. Shake Em Wild won at Lone Star Park in a 250-yard maiden event.
His third dam, Time Runs Wild, was a four-time winner who is a multiple stakes finalist, including in the Prescott Downs Futurity-G3 and AQRA Futurity-G3.
Runner-up Eye This Carter (Carters Cartel-Eye Kick), with jockey Heriberto Aguilar-Orozco aboard, was dismissed at odds of 20-1. The filly is owned by Luis Antonio Casas and trained by Manuel Pizana. Bred in Louisiana by Steve Duhon, Eye This Carter broke her maiden in her sec- ond lifetime start on July 15 at Delta Downs, going wire-to-wire in a 220-yard race and
winning by 1/2-length. Eye This Carter was a 2020 LQHBA Yearling Sale consignment, fitted up by Spring Hill Farms and pur- chased by Jesus Marquez, selling for $6,700. This was the filly’s fouth start and third time lighting the board, increasing her bankroll
to $50,940 with the addition of the $35,040 second place share of the purse.
Rare B (FDD Dynasty-Never Say Never B) and jockey Luis Vivanco finished in third place for owner Jose Espinosa and condi- tioiner Jose Lopez. Bred in Texas by Bielau Oaks, Rare B captured the $15,000 Sam Houston Juvenile Stakes on May 28, win- ning his first stakes attempt by 3/4-lengths. He broke his maiden in those trial in his second start on May 7. Rare Be also won his trial and was a finalist in the GCFA July Firecracker Futurity. The sorrel gelding was a $13,500 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale gradu- ate and has now banked nearly $70,000 in seven outings for his connections.
OJD Miss Lola (One Sweet Jess-Bugs Wagon) finished fourth and was followed by Leveraj (Duponte-Miss Aguilar), Mysterious Patriot (Jet Black Patriot-Mysterious Night), A Lil Pollitical (Apollitical Blood-Lil Fishy), A Revenant Beau (A Revenant- Jumpn Beau Chick), and Cartel In The Bayou (Five Bar Cartel-La Mos Chingono). Cooling The Fire was scratched.
