APPOLLITICAL HAWKEYE

Trainer Alex Wessels and jockey Stormy Smith capped a successful day of stakes wins on Sept. 25 at Prairie Meadows, teaming to win three stakes races on the day, including taking down top prize in the $99,260 Polk County Derby with Appollitical Hawkeye.
Appollitical Hawkeye broke sharply and grabbed the lead at the start of the 400-yard test. He main- tained a clear advantage through the lane, but CR Appollitical Joe and jockey Edwin Escobedo made
it interesting late, rallying furiously approaching the finish. At the wire, Appollitical Hawkeye had enough in the tank to hold his fast-charging rival at bay to register the win by a neck. The winner stopped the timer in :20.320, good for a speed index of 83.
Owned by Kay Sage and saddled by Alex Wessels, Appolitical Hawkeye scored his 4th lifetime victory and initial stakes win. The bay gelding now owns a record of 8-4-2-1 and the $45,652 winner’s share of increased his earnings to $98,127. Prior to this race, Appollitical Hawkeye won an optional claiming at Prairie Meadows on Aug. 27 and prior to that, he was 2nd in the Cyclone Derby. Last season at 2, he was 3rd in the Jim Bader Futurity in his final outing of 2020.
Bred in Iowa by Craig Kirby, Appollitical Hawkeye is out of Cartels Belle, a graded stakes win- ner and earner of $102,531 during her racing career.
CR Appollitical Joe (Apollitical Jess-LW Evening Lajolla) was 2nd for Richard & Curt Tobin and trainer Jason Olmstead. Be The Change (Dominyun-A Lil Diva) and David Pinon finished 4th for Brenda Onstot & trainer Tony Jones, but was moved to 3rd after the DQ of PI Pearl Harbor. Paint Me Tres (Tres Seis-Paint Me Anywhere), Elbullseye (Lil Kool Wagon-Bayou Now), TS Wave as I Fly Bye (Wave Carver-That’s My Daughter), DF Fabulous Flare One Fabulous Eagle-Nothinlikelovin) & PI Pearl Harbor (PYC Paint Your Wagon-For Your First Lady) followed. Iris Cowboy Casanova, Lil Kool Flash, & Lil Romance Wagon scratched.

Apollitical Mogul, racing for Tom Maher of Pierre, South Dakota, rallied to win the Sept. 18, $20,000 Prairie Sprint Stakes at Prairie Meadows.
Trained by Jason Olmstead and sent to post as the 4-5 favorite, Apollitical Mogul went 330-yards in :16.794 while defeating Heza Blues Man by a neck. Edwin Escobedo rode the bay mare.
Apollitical Mogul was bred in Texas by Mercy Hinklins Horse Farm LLC, and she was purchased by Maher for $20,000 at the 2017 Heritage Place Yearling Sale. The five-year-old is out of Cash Cartel, a winning daughter of Corona Cartel and a half-sister to Grade 3 winner La Jolla Maid. Apollitical Mogul is a half-sister to graded stakes winners Cash Flow Cartel and FDD Going Grand.
Apollitical Mogul was shortening in distance off of her wire-to-wire, 1 1/4-length victory in the 400-yard, $36,933 Q-Racing Video Prairie Meadows Distaff Challenge Stakes-G3 on Aug. 14. Campaigned in five states, the mare has won 10 of 31 races, including 3 stakes wins, 3 stakes seconds & 4 stakes thirds. The $11,800 winner’s share of this purse from her third career stakes score increased her bankroll to $199,339.
Runner-up Heza Blues Man (Favorite Cartel-Eyesa Blues Girl) earned $3,800 to bring his bankroll to $133,183 from 32 outs. Eugenio Navarrete Jr. rode the five-year-old gelding and $35,000 yearling purchase for owner Chelsey Badura and trainer Ed Hardy.
Chicks With Coronas (Apollitical Blood-Cache Corona) ran 3rd & pocketed $2,200 for owners Sharon Hafliger and R.J. Ziegler, who purchased the 4-year-old filly for $11,000 at the 2018 Heritage Place Yearling Sale. Cristian Esqueda was up for trainer Casey Black.
Completing the field were HR Storm On In
(Red Storm Cat-Scentsy), Oh So Valiant (Mighty B Valiant-Our Wranglin Gal), and Relentless Chick (Hes Relentless-Meaningful Memories). A Valiant Diamond & El Oh El scratched.

Deutsch, a homebred son of the One Famous Eagle stallion One Fabulous Eagle, is owned and trained by Patrick Swan. The gelding rallied
strongly to win the $20,000 Valley Junction Juvenile at Prairie Meadows on Sept. 24.
The 5-2 favorite in a full field of 10 two year olds, Deutsch covered 350 yards in :17.671 for a 94 speed index while defeating Candy Hero by a head. Nik Goodwin rode Deutsch, who was recording his first career stakes victory.
Raced in two states, including Minnesota, Deutsch has won four of five starts, and the $7,200 winner’s share of this purse pushed his earnings to $35,435. The gelding won three in a row and then finished fourth in the $50,210 John Deere Prairie Meadows Juvenile Challenge on Aug. 15, just prior to his win in the Valley Junction Juvenile.
Deutsch was bred in Oklahoma out of winner Hollie Jollie, who was a runner-up in the Altoona Derby-G3 and IQHRA Fall Sale Futurity-RG3. She has produced 5 winners from 6 starters, including stakes winner and top earner Bout Tree Fiddy. The gelding traces back to his 4th dam, Easy One Fine Day, who was a finalist in the 1985 All American-G1.
Candy Hero (Jess Good Candy-Queens Hero) finished second under Bonifacio Quiroz for owner XCEL Partners 2020 and trainer Ed Hardy. Owned and trained by Stacy Charette-Hill, Hard Rock Candy (Corona Cartel-Rock This Candy Tree) fin- ished third. Eugenio Navarrete Jr. rode the colt.
