River Flash, a gray son of the Chicks Beduino stallion Chicks Regard racing for Robert M. Driggers and Ben Lee Ivey, sprinted to a
3/4-length victory in the $50,000 New Mexico State Fair Juvenile Stakes for state-breds at The Downs at Albuquerque on Sept. 19.
Trained by Wes Giles, River Flash covered 400 yards in :19.534 while posting a 95 speed index. Emilio Tapia rode the colt.
River Flash was bred by Ivey Cattle Co., and he broke his maiden with a neck victory in one of seven New Mexico State Fair Futurity-RG3 trials on Aug. 27.
The colt is out of Riverside Flash, a home- bred winning daughter of First Moonflash and
a finalist in the 2017 Zia-RG1 and New Mexico Cup-RG2 futurities. River Flash’s second dam, the homebred winning Mr Eye Opener mare Riverside Eye Opener, ran second in the ’04 La Mariposa Handicap-G3 at The Downs at Albuquerque.
River Flash made his debut with an eighth- place finish in a 350-yard Mountain Top Futurity-RG2 trial at Ruidoso Downs on June 4. The colt has won 2 of 3 starts, and the $30,000 winner’s share of the New Mexico State Fair Juvenile purse pushed his bankroll to $34,720.

AQHA ALB Distance Chal.-G3
MADEWELL
by John Moorehouse
Going the distance in Albuquerque has been a habit for Madewell. The seven-year-old gelding ran in the AQHA Downs at Albuquerque Distance
Challenge for the fourth consecutive year, repeating as winner in the $56,194 Grade 3 event on Sept. 18.
Trained by Bernard Baca, Madewell broke from the five gate in fourth and had to chase the early pace-set- ters. Jockey Maria Baca had Madewell running second at the first call. Madewell closed within a 1/2-length of the lead going into the stretch, then blew past en route to a 1 1/2-length victory.
The 870-yard trip took :43.485 for a New Track Record, surpassing the :43.866 run by TTY From Mr Pye on Sept. 2, 2016. The record-setting run produced a 110 speed index. The Madewells also collected a $29,221 payday that pushed their gelding’s total earn- ings $312,049.
With this victory, Madewell qualified for this year’s AQHA Distance Championship, a race with an estimated $125,000 purse taking place Oct. 23 as part of Bank of America Challenge Championship Night.
Ray and Davy Madewell homebred the gelding that is their namesake. Madewell now holds four stakes wins, including last year’s AQHA Distance Challenge Championship-G1.
Madewell was bred out of Streakin Peacock, the dam of two winners from four starters.
Wascallywittlewabbit (Heza Motor Scooter-Rabbits N Diamonds), the post-time favorite, finished second and had a four-race win streak snapped. Rogers Farms owns the gelding, a Michael Joiner trainee who had Benito Baca in the irons.
Nicos First Cartel (First Prize Perry-Cartel Moon) hit the board in third for owner Erica Carreon and trainer Jesus Carrete. Alejandro Medellin was aboard.
Hez Fabulous (FDD Dynasty-Shes Fabulous) and Edelman (Favorite Cartel-Katie Katella) completed the field. Grey Handsome scratched.
Two Rivers Stakes-G3
JUICE IS LOOSE
by John Moorehouse
Make it two straight stakes wins for Juice Is Loose. The four-year-old bay colt achieved that feat while taking the $35,000 Two Rivers Stakes-G3
on Sept. 11 at Prairie Meadows.
Once the gates opened, there was no catching
Juice Is Loose. The colt broke on top emerging from the 3-post, promptly separating himself by daylight as he hit the first call. With Edwin Escobedo
aboard, Juice Is Loose only got stronger, leading by 1 1/2-lengths going into the stretch and coasting to the line with a 1 1/4-length margin.
Jason Olmstead trains Juice Is Loose, who made the 440-yard trip in :21.711, good for a 103 speed index while running into a 5 mph headwind. The win brought home a $20,300 payday, elevating the colt’s total earnings to $135,705.
Owned by Tom Maher and Stephen Williams, Juice Is Loose improved his overall record to 5-6-4 in 20 starts. The colt entered black type with his winning effort in last month’s Skip Zimmerman Memorial Stakes at Canterbury Park.
Bred by Sam W. Green, Juice Is Loose is out of Miss Southern DD, a 2011 mare who is a stakes win- ner herself. She captured the 2015 Tallahassee Stakes at Hialeah Park.
Ferrari James (Ivory James-Ferarri Fast Prize), who holds multiple graded stakes wins including the 2017 version of the Two Rivers, placed second for owner Alfredo Botello. The Alex Wessels trainee had Daniel Amaya in the irons. Graded stakes winner
JK Wildcat Red (One Dashing Eagle-Shaky Girl) placed third for owner Regina Laymon and trainer Kenny Laymon. Cristian Esqueda drew the riding assignment. Followed by Hooked On Win (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Pretty Girl Kate), Justafamilytradition (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Jess An Illusion), Fire N Guns (Freighttrain B-Garters N Guns) and Dream Dynasty (FDD Dynasty-Dream Ride).
