“I limped a little bit, and it was hard for me to get the horses to go fast enough,” she said.
The Logans’ longtime veterinarian and friend Dr. Jay Ross suggested that she try owning racehorses. Ross introduced her
to trainer Dee Keener. One of their early successes was with the Paint gelding DTL Batter Up, who finished second in the 2016 Pot O’ Gold Futurity and third in the 2016 PSBA Futurity-G1, 2017 PSBA Derby-G1, and 2017 Lorelei Derby-G2. Elizabeth also bred and raised the Paint filly El Docs Best Chic, who won for her and Keener at Will Rogers Downs last year.
EC Revenge reached the races in 2019. He won all four of his starts at 2, including the Oklahoma Futurity and the Heritage Place Juvenile Stakes, and earned $200,164 under Keener’s tutelage.
Like EC Revenge, Tres Crystals made his racing debut in his trial for the Oklahoma Futurity. Ridden by Bryan Candanosa, Tres Crystals scored by 1 1/4-lengths and qualified the third fastest for the main event.
In the March 19 final, Tres Crystals broke second and then went to the front. He battled with fastest-qualifier Jessa Beast and defeated that runner by a head. Tres Crystals stopped the timer in :15.498 for 300 yards.
Logan posed in the Remington winner’s circle and then walked up to pat Tres Crystals.
“It’s just so wonderful to be here,” she said. “I have a good trainer and good jockey. What more can I ask for?”
Candanosa is only 19, more than 75 years younger than Tres Crystals’ owner. He began riding in 2018, following his uncle, Adalberto, as a jockey.
“We were gunning all the way down the lane,” Bryan said after the race. “I was really confident tonight.”
Keener was winning his third race on
the Remington card. Earlier, he saddled JS Runnin Wire to win the Speedhorse Graham Paint & Appaloosa Stakes and Signs Of Livewire to win the Oklahoma Paint & Appaloosa Futurity-G1.
Simmons Racing bred Tres Crystals in Texas from the Walk Thru Fire mare Crystal Sola, winner of the 2009 Oklahoma Juvenile Challenge-G3 and Fair Meadows Juvenile Stakes. Simmons Racing bought Crystal Sola, along with an embryo by One Famous Eagle, for $208,000 from the 6666 Ranch at the 2015 Heritage Place Winter Mixed Sale.
Crystal Sola has produced seven winners from 12 starters. The second dam, Corona Crystal, won the 2006 Whataway To Go Handicap and was multiple graded stakes- placed. It is the family of Champions Dashing Phoebe, Special Phoebe, Heartswideopen, and American Runaway.
Jessa Beast (Mr Jess Perry-Famous Corona Lady) finished second. Raul Ramirez Jr. rode the colt for owner Newman Cattle Company LLC and trainer Trey Wood. Jessa Beast’s first start came in his Oklahoma Futurity trial.
Leonardo Alcala owns and trains
third-place Sunday Sylence (Ivory James- Featuring Jessie). Rodrigo Vallejo rode the filly, who ran second to Jessa Beast in her trial, also her first lifetime start.
Completing the field were Ricanelo (Big Daddy Cartel-Total Miracle), Southern Seis (Tres Seis-Southern Miss), Fancy Scarface (PYC Fun N Fancy-Dolls In Fire), Ima Bigg Rush (Big Daddy Cartel-Ima China Rush), Cartels Dasher (Mr Apollitical Dash- Cartelsgracewillgoon), Return My Corona (A Revenant-Sippn Secret Coronas), and Capo On Fire (Capo De Capi-Caliente Kate).
