Golden Boi’s victory in the $215,000
El Primero Del Ano Derby-G3 at Los Alamitos on March 27 meant more than just
the win. After he had qualified the fastest for the Golden State Million Futurity-G1 last fall, he developed colitis, missing the final and putting a scare into his connections.
“It was tough not to be a part of the Golden State Million because we felt that we had
the horse to compete in the race with,” said Valentin Zamudio, who trains Golden Boi for owner-breeder M and G Farms Inc. “At the same time, the most important thing was to save the horse. When he got sick on us, I never thought about the Golden State Million from that point on. We were nervous.”
Fortunately, Golden Boi recovered, and during his time off he was voted the 2021 Champion 2-Year-Old Colt. Zamudio said that he contemplated bringing Golden Boi back in time for the Los Alamitos Winter Derby-G1, but that he wanted to be sure the colt was 100%.
