aking just his second start away from Los
Alamitos Race Course in Southern California and his second foray into stakes company, From Above joined the ranks of stakes winners with a front-running victory in the $35,000 White Tie Stakes on March 12 at Rillito Park.
Ridden by Jesus Osuna, From Above broke well in the 550-yard test and assumed command soon after the start. He surged a 1/2-length clear of his rivals early and rolled through the lane virtually unchallenged by any of his five foes. Sent off as the odds-on favorite, From Above scored powerfully by a length in the end, stopping the timer in a lively :27.263, which earned a speed index of 106.
Owned by Pedro Espinoza and conditioned by Ramon Bazurto, From Above improved his record to 20-4-3-2 and the $19,250 winner’s share of the purse increased his lifetime bankroll to $46,992. Bred in California by Edward Allred, From Above is out of Celestial Being, who was undefeated in two career starts on the racetrack in California for Allred and trainer Art Sherman.
Stakes winner CC Revv Her (Corona Cartel- Revv It Up), piloted by Kevin Carbajal, offered game chase but proved no match for the winner late and finished second for owner Jose Aguilar Mendoza and trainer Eloy Navarro. The 4-year-old gelding was bred in Texas by Paragon Farms.
L Bar D Classic Trip (Mr. Nightlinger TB-Be First Rose) and jockey Jaime Lopez finished third for owner and trainer Amy Nelson. The multiple stakes-placed 7-year-old son of the Thoroughbred stallion Mr. Nightlinger TB was bred in Oregon by F. Darrell and Linda Sanders.
Declared Best Card (Docs Best Card-Dividends Declared) Abbyslovintherain (Stellar Rain TB-Jess Hi Maintenance) and Wild Monkey (First N Wild- Monkey Wench TB) completed the order of finish.

astest qualifier Cartels Courage led at every call
en route to a 1/2-length win in the March 20, $39,500 Ferrari Racing Stables Rillito Derby for 3-year-olds at Rillito Park.
Prepped by Jesus Carrete for owner Hector O’Campo and racing against a reported 13-mph head wind, Cartels Courage covered 300 yards wire- to-wire in :15.446. Jacob Enriquez rode the sorrel son of the Corona Cartel stallion Coronado Cartel.
Cartels Courage was coming off a 1/2-length victory in the second of two Rillito Derby trials on Feb. 27.
Cartels Courage has won all four of his outs this year, including the $51,100 Turf Paradise Maiden Stakes on Jan. 27. All told, the gelding has won five of 12 races, and the $21,725 winner’s share of this purse from his first official stakes score pushed his earnings to $80,149.
The gelding was bred in Oklahoma by Flag Ranch LLC, and he was purchased by Newman Cattle Co. LLC for $57,000 at the 2020 Heritage Place Yearling Sale in Oklahoma City. Cartels Courage is out of winner Tinys Courage. His second dam, Tiny First Effort, won three graded stakes in California in 2001, including the Southern California Derby-G1 at Los Alamitos, and was that season’s Champion 3-Year-Old Filly.
One Famous Trick (Favorite Trick-One Famous Surfer) finished second for owner, Jose Mendoza. Luis Martinez rode the colt for trainer Eloy Navarro.
Ricardo Ramirez’s Good Reason To Run (Good Reason SA-Secret Separation) ran third under Martin Osuna for trainer Antonio Soto.
Oh Whatta Eagle (One Famous Eagle-PYC Oh Whatta Rose) finished fourth and was followed
by Rockin Jo Kool (Kool Wagon-Solid Anita Jo), Mr Zee (Ivory James-Zefee), Confusion (Kiddy Up-Bemused) and Remember Denny (Docs Best Card-Brownleggedwoman).

HIGHWIRE DANCE

aking his first career start at Rillito Park and
sent to post as the 7-10 favorite in a field of seven Quarter Horses and Thoroughbreds, Highwire Dance rolled to a 5 1/2-length victory in the $35,500 Howard & Charlotte King Stakes on March 26.
Highwire Dance went 870 yards in :45.377 while recording his first lifetime stakes win. Michael Ybarra rode the 7-year-old son of High Rate Of Return for owner and trainer Jesus E. Olivas-Valenzuela.
Campaigned in three states, including Oklahoma and New Mexico, Highwire Dance has won five
of 28 starts, and the $19,525 winner’s share of the Howard & Charlotte King Stakes purse bumped
his bankroll to $69,225, of which $61,477 has been earned from his 17 outs at 870-yards.
Highwire Dance also finished third in the
Classy Sheikh Stakes and fourth in the Turf Paradise Championship last year and was a finalist in the 2019 Grade 3 Downs at Albuquerque Distance Challenge.
Highwire Dance was bred in Oklahoma by country music star Toby Keith’s Dream Walkin Farms Inc. The sorrel gelding is out of A Day For Dancing TB, who won the 6-furlong $51,250 Prairie Meadows Debutante Stakes.
Count Alexei TB (Vronsky-Copperopolis) finished second for owner Michael Robert Morris, who claimed the 5-year-old gelding for $3,000
at Turf Paradise on March 15. Joree Scriver rode Count Alexei for trainer Kenneth Stubblefield. Wild Monkey (First N Wild-Monkey Wench) ran third under Antonio Bazan for owner Marlette Cornejo and trainer Daniel Hernandez.
Heza Eagle (One Famous Eagle-Copes Hope), Awesome Heights TB (Awesome Again-Colina Verde), Leedslimit TB (Tannersmyman-My Sis Liz), and Stone Cash (Mr Corona Cash-Oneslickstone) completed the order of finish.
