Virginia Hyland Stakes
FAMOUSSHININGSTAR
Fby Tracy Gantz
amous Shining Star consistently runs good races, but
she hadn’t yet been able to add a stakes victory to her resume. That changed on March 13 when she captured the $35,000 Virginia Hyland Stakes at Los Alamitos.
Bumped a little in the hind end at the start, Famous Shining Star didn’t let that deter her. She went right to the front for jockey Cruz Mendez, and though it was close at the wire, she scored by a nose in :17.687 for 350 yards.
“She’s been such a hard knocker,” said Jose Flores, who trains Famous Shining Star for owner Johnny Trotter.
The four-year-old filly in 10 prior starts had
won three and finished second three times. Julianna Hawn Holt bred Famous Shining Star in Texas from Thewayouwantmetoo, winner of the 2004 Rainbow Futurity-G1.
Thewayouwantmetoo has produced seven winners from 11 starters, including A Revenant, who won the Rainbow Futurity in 2016 and was voted the Champion 2-Year-Old Colt of that year, and stakes-placed Belle Helene, Luv Supreme, and The Hiway. The second dam, Hope And Glory, also produced Mexican stakes winner Hesa Eye Opener.
Gentry Farms’ homebred College Scandal (Coronas Leaving You-Fovee) finished second under jockey Jesus Ayala for trainer Juan Aleman. Flores also trained third-placed Elphaba (Kiss My Hocks-Witchs Streak). Jairo Rangel rode the 4-year-old filly for owner Bobby Simmons. Elphaba has won three of her 14 starts.
In My Heart (Apollitical Jess-Heartbeat) and Astranomical (Dominyun-Quick Moon Sign) dead-heated for fourth. They were followed by Cotton Cartel (Special Cartel-Cotton Belle TB), La Estrella Corona (Corona Czech-Shadow Lake TB), Cartel Fire Two (Foose-Cartel Fire), and Go To Girl (Favorite Cartel-Remember Me Rose).
Moonist Stakes
MISTER TORNADO
Tby Tracy Gantz
he Flores family has been involved with Moonist
Stakes winner Mister Tornado and his family for several generations. Fernando Flores owns Mister Tornado, and Flores’ father, Salvador, bred the gelding from a family that he has had back
to the third dam, Cash Your Tickets. Fernando and Salvador are even breeding the stallion Cinco Blancos, a full brother to Mister Tornado.
Mister Tornado went off at 16-1, the second- longest shot in the seven-horse field for the March 20 Moonist Stakes at Los Alamitos. Breaking from the outside post, Mister Tornado got away well on the lead for jockey Henry Lopez and was never headed, reaching the wire a 1/2-length in front in :19.922 for 400 yards.
This was the second stakes win for 5-year-old Mister Tornado, who also captured the 2020 Adequan Los Alamitos Derby Challenge and ran third in the 2020 Sgt Pepper Feature Handicap. Felix Gonzalez trains Mister Tornado for Flores.
Salvador Flores bred Mister Tornado in California from Spanish Sola Mark, who has produced two starters, both winners.
Just A Dasha Hero (Valiant Hero-Dasha Freda), owned by Bland Farm Inv., Robyn Gordon, and breeder S-Quarter K LLC, finished second. Erasmo Gasca rode the 4-year-old gelding for trainer Jose Flores. Just A Dasha Hero won the 2021 Town Policy Stakes.
Ramon Sanchez piloted Cattail Cove (Favorite Cartel-Katie Katella) to third for owner Link Newcomb and trainer Juan Aleman. The 5-year-old gelding has placed in seven other stakes.
Rounding out the field were Bail Czech (Corona Czech-Letty Bail Regis Out), Chocolatito (Favorite Cartel-Enjoy The Walk), Up And Atem (Favorite Cartel-Up For It), and Stolen Lives (Seperate Interest-Enjoy The Walk).
Sixy Chick Handicap
UP TO GOOD
Eby Emily Paulk
dward Allred’s homebred Up To Good scored
her first stakes victory in the $20,000 Sixy Chick Handicap at Los Alamitos on March 26.
Ridden by Jonathan Roman, the filly broke on top from the 4-post and was never headed. Despite the rest of the field falling into some trouble, Up To Good crossed the wire clean with a 1/2-length lead.
Trained by Scott Willoughby, Up To Good secured the $11,000 winner’s share of the purse, boosting her total lifetime earnings to $33,160.
Up To Good was coming off a fourth place finish in the March 5 trials for the Los Alamitos Oaks. In addition to the Sixy Chick Handicap, she has scored two other victories with two seconds and two thirds from 14 starts.
Allred bred Up To Good out of multiple winner Better Be Good. She has produced 100% winners from three starters, including stakes placed Best
Yet, who was third in the 2019 California Breeders Freshman Stakes at Los Alamitos. Up To Good is her first stakes winner.
Allred and Willoughby also teamed up for runner-up Hitters Count (Kiddy Up-What A Hit), who bumped with World Famous Mia at the start, but was able to hold on for second. The filly was ridden by Jesus Ayala. Hitters Count won last year’s Fred Scane Memorial Handicap.
Famous Carmilita (One Famous Eagle-Corona Carmelira) lost her footing during the break and came out in fourth. Under the guidance of jockey Eduardo Nicasio, the filly made up ground to grab third for owner Moonshine Racing and trainer Bret Vickery. Famous Carmilita won last year’s Los Alamitos Wild West Futurity-G3.
World Famous Mia (One Famous Eagle-Send The Candy Wagon) and Race Thru The Fire (Fly Thru The Fire-Miss Racy Racie) completed the order of finish. Last Magic Rhythm was scratched.
