New Mexican Spring Futurity-RG2
JESSES WISH
by John Moorhouse
JJ Gonzales III obtained his trainers license less than a year ago, and he came into 2022 looking for his first win in a graded stakes race. Now, he has four, with Jesses Wish’s victorious run in the $313,030 New Mexican Spring Futurity-RG2. Jesses Wish prevailed in a photo finish in the 300-yard event, held April 3 at Sunland Park.
“He’s done everything right since day one,” Gonzales said. “I think, as we went into the race, that’s what made me so nervous. He hadn’t made any mistakes.
“Horses are just like us; they’re going to make mistakes,” he added. “It’s just a matter of when.” Those mistakes didn’t happen in this race.
Jesses Wish broke well from the No. 7 gate underneath rider Mario Delgado. The rookie gelding moved into the front by a 1/2-length as he entered the stretch. Cruzin for Chickz made a late rally, but Jesses Wish held him off by a neck once the photo finish was reviewed.
