“Ode to My Father”

duk-soo Youn upon his arrival at Busan after parting
ways with his father during the frantic evacuation
from Hungnam Port, a north Korean port city, in
winter of 1950. The movie, which was released

million viewers, captures the protagonist’s life
through a series of events portraying Korea’s most
pivotal moments in modern history: the evacuation
of 14,000 refugees by a US cargo ship SS Meredith
Victory from Hungnam Port during the Korean War;
the sending of 11,057 nurses and 8,000 coal miners
to West germany as foreign workers; Korea’s
participation in the Vietnam War; and Korea Broadcasting System’s 1983 Special live
Broadcasting entitled “Finding dispersed Families” – a 138 day televised program that helped
