support a young single mother with the gift of education
The Empowered by Light Program of the Lutheran Church
in Liberia began in 2015 as a way to provide resources for
single mothers attending Lutheran elementary and high
schools. The program provides structured peer support
led by a woman from each school community. After
participating in the Empowered by Light group at her
school for one year, a student mother is eligible for a
scholarship and receives a solar light that makes night-
time study possible. Scholarships, renewable through
graduation, require regular attendance, active
participation in a peer support group and strong
academic standing.
Empowered by Light currently involves 90-100 young
student mothers, grades 6-12, ages 14-36, from nine
communities in the interior of Liberia. 50 students were
awarded full-tuition scholarships last year, making their
school attendance possible.
