WHY THIS GIFT MATTERS!
The Food Bank of Lincoln’s Back Pack Program
began during the 2004-2005 school year when
food-filled backpacks were sent home with 50
students at Clinton Elementary School on Friday
afternoons. The program quickly took off. Today
2,000 local children and their families are being
served.
The most current data from the Community
Health Endowment of Lincoln shows that 12% of
Lancaster County residents live in poverty. Of
the 77 census tracts mapped, 27 (35.1 %) exceed a
12% poverty rate. Through the BackPack Program
students who qualify for free or reduced-price
lunch receive food for use by their family
through the weekend or to help with meals over
a school break.
