Redwood Handicap
L BAR D CLASSIC TRIP
by John Moorehouse
LBar D Classic Trip broke a 16-year-old track record on May 24 at Grants Pass Downs, winning the $15,100 Redwood Handicap in the
process.
Running at 600 yards, L Bar D Classic Trip
covered the distance in :29.826, registering a 119 speed index. That clocking proved to be almost half a second faster than the standing track record of :30.320 tallied by BLS In High Gear on
June 19, 2005.
Amy Nelson owns and trains L Bar D Classic
Trip, a six-year-old sorrel gelding who now holds two wins in four starts this year and 10 overall victories in 31 career outs.
The $7,500 payday from the Redwood Handicap increased the gelding’s lifetime bankroll to $54,144.
This marked the first win in stakes company for L Bar D Classic Trip, but he is no stranger to stakes competition.
He finished second by a slim nose in the Firecracker Futurity at this same track in 2017. He also qualified to and was a finalist in the Los Alamitos Wild West Futurity and Baxter Andruss Futurity as a rookie.
L Bar D Classic Trip was also a finalist in the Emerald Downs Juvenile Challenge, Sun Downs Derby Challenge, Wayne Brasher Memorial Stakes and the American Flyer Stakes.
Bryson Butterfly was in the irons for the record-setting run by L Bar D Classic Trip in
the Redwood Handicap. The gelding moved into the lead from the inside at the top of the stretch, then withstood a challenge from CM Once Ina Bluemoon to hit the wire first by a neck.
Darrell and Linda Sanders bred L Bar D Classic Trip and own her dam, Be First Rose, a 2004 mare.
CM Once Ina Bluemoon (Ivory James-Cool Blue Corona) was the post-time favorite but the multiple stakes winner finished second in this race. Chris Sutton is the owner and Nick Lowe the trainer. Luis Gonzalez did the riding.
Big Bad Brad (Sixthirteen TB-Missy Nickie Bac), a 16-1 longshot, placed third for owner/ trainer Charlene Whiteside. Jose Figueroa was in the irons.
Followed by Chicks Fast Farley (Chicks N Honey-CPR First Time), El Moro Prieto (Cruzero- Spool Girl TB), and JS Royal 613 (Sixthirteen TB-All American Phantom). Hes A Bugin scratched.
Kaweah Bar Handicap-G1
MENTAL ERROR
by Tracy Gantz
Though always consistent, Mental Error put
in back-to-back wins for the first time in the $35,000 Kaweah Bar Handicap-G1 at Los Alamitos on May 1. His previous victory also came in a stakes, the March 20 First Day of Spring Stakes.
Ramon Sanchez rode Mental Error for trainer Paul Jones. Sent away the 3-2 favorite in the 350-yard Kaweah Bar, Mental Error bulleted right to the front and led throughout, scoring by a neck in :17.525.
Sanchez was winning his 150th stakes at Los Alamitos. He is behind only Eddie Garcia, at 153, in that category.
Jones trains Mental Error for owner Bobby Simmons, and the 4-year-old colt now has won six of 18 starts. Simmons bought Mental Error from breeder Dr. Steve Burns at the 2018 Los Alamitos Equine Sale for $16,000. California-bred Mental Error is out of stakes-winning IBA Quick Chick, who has produced seven winners in eight starters, including graded stakes winner Rite Quick and stakes-placed My Pillow.
Oscar Peinado piloted Redneck Ryan (Separatist-A Delightful Legacy) to second for own- ers Javier Chavez and Juan Moya and trainer Jaime Gomez. The 7-year-old horse had previously won seven races lifetime and finished second seven times.
Dr. Ed Allred’s homebred Circle City (Favorite Cartel-Moonlight Corona) finished third. Victor Salazar rode the 4-year-old gelding for trainer Scott Willoughby. Circle City won last year’s Golden State Derby-G2.
Old School Icon (Texas Icon-Cozie Fire) and Spirit Foose (Foose-Beauty Secrets) finished fourth and fifth. Cartel Love (Favorite Cartel-All About Love) and Up Is Up (Kiddy Up-Girls Choice) dead-heated for sixth, followed by Chicks Fayvorite (Favorite Cartel-Chicks Tell) and Red Hawk Cartel (Favorite Cartel-Red Hawk Chick). Black Fryday was scratched.
Miss Princess Handicap-G2
WAMBUI
by Tracy Gantz
Dr. Ed Allred, trainer Scott Willoughby, and jockey Victor Salazar combined to win back-to-back stakes at Los Alamitos over the weekend of May 8-9.
Following Chance It Now’s victory in the $45,000 La Pacifica Handicap, they scored with Wambui in the Miss Princess Handicap-G2 on May 9.
Wambui put in her own back-to-back effort, hav- ing previously taken the April 11 New Moon Stakes. In the 350-yard Miss Princess, as the 4-5 favorite, Wambui broke well in second, vied with a couple of rivals throughout, and won by a head in :17.668.
After returning in December from an eight-month rest, Wambui has won four of five races, her only loss a second in the Denim N Diamonds Handicap-G3.
“Ever since we brought her back, she’s just getting better each time we start her,”
said Willoughby.
Allred bought Wambui as a yearling from Dr.
Steve and Jo Burns’ Burns Ranch at the 2018 Los Alamitos Equine Sale for $50,000. Steve Burns bred Wambui in California from his homebred Babe On Fire. Wambui is the mare’s first winner in three starters. Stakes-placed Babe On The Fly, the second dam, has produced eight stakes winners.
Martha Wells’ homebred Fayvorite Chick (Favorite Cartel-Chicks Tell) finished second. Armando Cervantes rode the 4-year-old filly for trainer Matthew Fales. Fayvorite Chick ran second in the 2021 New Moon Stakes, 2021 Cypress Handicap, and 2020 Sgt Pepper Feature Handicap.
Allred’s homebred Registrant (Kiddy Up-Register To Win), also trained by Willoughby, finished third. Jesus Ayala rode Registrant, who has one win, one second, and one third in five previous starts.
Completing the field were All Prettied Up (Favorite Cartel-Pretty Jet High), Victorioso Dinastia (Favorite Cartel-Forgotten Dynasty), and Favorite Horizonte (Favorite Cartel-Last Shall Be First).
